Sonay Kartal beat Jelena Ostapenko 7-6 (11-9), 7-6 (7-5) in the Wuhan Open semi-finals on Saturday, October 17, 2026, to reach the first WTA 1000 final of her career. Kartal is ranked 170th in the world. She is the lowest-ranked player to reach a final at this level since the WTA 1000 format began in 2009, and only the second British woman to do it, after Johanna Konta.

The match turned on two tiebreaks and on Kartal's nerve. She trailed 4-1 in the first set and 4-1 again in the second. She saved set points in both sets, six in total across the match, and took the first tiebreak 11-9 and the second 7-5. Ostapenko, the 2017 French Open champion, hit 50 winners. Kartal won 88 points to 87, a single point across more than two hours of tennis.

A run built on seeded wins

Kartal did not arrive in the semi-finals by luck. She beat Belinda Bencic in the second round, then Jasmine Paolini, then Elina Svitolina 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 in the quarter-finals on Friday, October 16. Ostapenko was the fourth higher-ranked player she has beaten this week, and her fifth win in a row in Wuhan.

Each win has come the hard way. Against Svitolina she lost the second set and had to break serve in the last game of the third. Against Ostapenko she had to keep playing her own game while winners flew past her, and wait for the errors that came late in both tiebreaks. Ostapenko made 41 unforced errors to Kartal's 13.

Back from a back injury

This is only Kartal's third tournament since she returned from six months out with a stress fracture in her back. She was sidelined from March to September and missed three Grand Slam events. Before the injury she reached a career-high ranking of 44 in July 2025. The long layoff dropped her to 170.

Kartal said the semi-final was probably one of the toughest matches she has ever played. She said Ostapenko is at times unplayable and you have to ride that wave, and that mentally this was one of the best performances of her career.

What the final means

The run lifts Kartal back inside the top 50 in the live rankings and makes her the British number one. A win in Sunday's final would lift her to about 36th, a new career high. She will face the winner of the second semi-final between Iga Swiatek and Maja Chwalinska, two Polish players. Kartal has not played either woman before on the WTA Tour.

Her only tour title so far came at a WTA 250 event in Monastir in 2024. A WTA 1000 title would be a far bigger prize, and it would complete a comeback that few saw coming when she returned in September with a protected ranking and no match rhythm.
