A bridge between China and North Korea that stood finished but unused for more than a decade opens on October 15, Chinese state news agency Xinhua said on Wednesday.
The two sides will hold a joint opening ceremony for the New Yalu River Bridge, which links Dandong in China with Sinuiju in North Korea across the Yalu River. China completed its side of the bridge in 2014. North Korea left the approach roads and customs facilities on its side unfinished as relations cooled over Pyongyang's nuclear tests and the United Nations sanctions that followed.
A trade signal
The opening is the latest sign of warming ties between Beijing and Pyongyang. It comes weeks after North Korea opened its first road bridge with Russia. China's exports to North Korea rose to $2.3 billion last year, a six year high and a 25 percent increase on the year before. That is still well below trade levels from before the 2017 sanctions.
A working road bridge gives traders a faster route than the older crossing at Dandong, which has carried most legal trade between the two countries for decades. Customs facilities on the North Korean side were the missing piece, and their completion is what makes Thursday's opening real rather than ceremonial.
Why it matters
North Korea now has new road links to both of its big neighbors in the space of a few weeks. For China, the bridge supports a stated goal of steady, legal trade on its border. For outside governments, the question is what crosses it. Sanctions on North Korea remain in force, and trade in banned goods would breach them.
What happens next
Watch the first weeks of traffic. If truck volumes rise and customs data follows, the bridge becomes an economic fact, not just a photo opportunity. If volumes stay thin, the opening was mainly a diplomatic signal.
