ROME. A 24-hour strike by easyJet crew in Italy runs all day Friday, October 16, and it lands on the same day as walkouts by airport staff in Pisa, Florence and Venice. Flights across the easyJet Italian network face cancellations and delays outside two protected windows when services must run by law.

The easyJet stoppage runs from midnight to midnight. The USB Lavoro Privato union called it. AirHelp, the passenger rights group tracking the disruption, says the walkout covers pilots and cabin crew across Italy, with separate action the same day by airport workers at Pisa and Florence and by Poste Air Cargo staff. Security staff at Venice Marco Polo airport are also on a 24-hour strike.

Strike Tracker, which logs filed transport actions in Italy, says the stoppage covers easyJet's Italian bases and can lead to cancellations and delays on domestic and international easyJet flights to and from Italy throughout the day. Friday is also the start of the weekend travel rush, which raises the cost of every cancelled seat.

The two windows that still fly

Italian law protects flights in two daily bands during transport strikes. Departures scheduled from 7:00 to 10:00 in the morning and from 18:00 to 21:00 in the evening must operate. Everything outside those bands is at risk, and those protected flights fill fast with passengers moved from cancelled services.

Anyone booked to fly to, from or inside Italy on Friday should check their flight status before leaving for the airport. Thursday and Saturday services are expected to run fuller than usual, as travellers shift their trips off strike day.

What the fight is about

The dispute sits on a contract renewal signed on September 15. USB says the results of an internal staff consultation on the deal were published late, and that its request to observe the vote was refused. The strike was first called for October 15. The union withdrew that date on September 14 and refiled the action for October 16.

Passenger rights

A strike by an airline's own staff is not treated as extraordinary circumstances under European passenger rights rules. AirHelp says compensation under EC 261 may apply to easyJet disruption, up to 600 euros, depending on the flight. Airport worker stoppages are treated differently, so claims will turn on which walkout hit a given flight. Keep boarding passes and any cancellation notices.
