Several of India's largest mutual funds suspended bulk subscriptions to their gold exchange-traded funds late on Thursday, just ahead of the festive season, when demand for gold in the country usually peaks.
The public notices came from fund houses including Kotak Mahindra Mutual Fund, UTI Mutual Fund and HDFC Mutual Fund, The Hindu BusinessLine and Reuters reported. The notices gave no reason for the halt. Investors can still redeem their holdings, and existing systematic investment plans will keep being processed at the prevailing net asset value, according to a Live Mint explainer on the notices.
A nudge from the regulator
The halt followed a nudge from the Securities and Exchange Board of India, according to a mutual fund executive familiar with the discussions. Two bullion industry officials confirmed to Reuters that the move came after talks with the market regulator. A spokesperson for the regulator did not respond to a request for comment outside business hours.
The timing sits on top of a hard year for the rupee. Higher global oil prices have lifted India's import bill, foreign investors have sold Indian shares heavily, and strong demand for gold has added to the pressure, Reuters reported. The government raised import duties on gold and silver earlier this year, and fund houses had already capped large gold ETF investments in June.
Why gold, why now
India is the world's largest consumer of silver and its second largest consumer of gold, and it imports most of the metal it uses. That dependence can widen the trade deficit when buying surges. Dussehra falls in October and Diwali in early November, and buying gold at festival time is considered auspicious. Inflows into gold and silver ETFs jumped during last year's festive season, when investors turned away from weak stock market returns.
The odd part is the recent import data. Gold imports fell to $1.8 billion in September, down from $2.3 billion in August, and imports of gold and silver have fallen sharply over the past two months compared with a year earlier. A dealer at a private bank that supplies bullion to ETFs told Reuters the halt looked surprising on those numbers and read it as a precaution against an October import surge rather than a response to one already under way.
What happens next
For ordinary investors, little changes overnight. Holdings can be redeemed, and monthly plans keep running. What is blocked is fresh bulk money into the funds, the kind of large inflows that force fund houses to buy and import more physical gold. Whether the suspension lifts after the festivals, and whether more fund houses join it, now depends on the regulator and on how festival demand shows up in the October import figures.
