Jonathan Osorio scored in a 14th consecutive season for Toronto FC on Wednesday night, and Toronto beat D.C. United 2-1 at BMO Field in the club's last home game of the season. Osorio equalized in the 64th minute, and Josh Sargent scored the winner in the 86th minute. The win kept Toronto's playoff hopes alive, and the result eliminated D.C. United from postseason contention.
A record no MLS player had set
Osorio is the first player in MLS history to score in 14 consecutive seasons with a single club. His goal was his first of the season, and it was also his 70th goal for Toronto FC. He is the third player in club history to reach 70, after Sebastian Giovinco and Jozy Altidore.
Osorio has now played and scored in each of his fourteen seasons with Toronto, from 2013 to 2026. His first goal for the club came against the LA Galaxy on March 30, 2013. He was part of the club's 2017 treble era, when Toronto won MLS Cup, the Supporters' Shield and the Canadian Championship in the same year.
Asked whether he would celebrate the milestone, Osorio said: "No." He added: "You look at it, and it's something that for sure is to be proud of, but honestly my focus right now is trying to make the playoffs for this team."
He also said: "Our fans deserve it. It's great to win at home always, and these fans are one of the best in the league. They're amazing. The way they show up for the team, year in, year out, highs, lows, these fans deserve a competitive team."
How the comeback was built
D.C. led at halftime. Andre Dozzell scored in the 29th minute, his first MLS goal, from a Silvan Hefti feed, to put United ahead 1-0.
Toronto leveled in the 64th minute. Djordje Mihailovic's in-swinging corner was headed on by Sargent, and the ball deflected off Osorio's back and past former Toronto goalkeeper Sean Johnson. The play gave Sargent his 11th goal contribution of the season, with eight goals and three assists.
The winner came four minutes from time. Theo Corbeanu's left-footed strike hit the post and fell to Sargent, who guided home the rebound in the 86th minute for his ninth goal of the season.
The playoff picture
The win took Toronto to 9 wins, 11 losses and 12 draws, on 39 points, and improved Toronto to 3 wins, 1 loss and 1 draw in its past five matches. Toronto is chasing its first Audi MLS Cup Playoffs berth since 2020.
D.C. United fell to 7 wins, 13 losses and 12 draws, on 33 points, and has lost four straight matches. For Osorio, who said his focus is helping this team get into the playoffs, the record night ended with the chase still alive.
