Edmonton Oilers beat the Calgary Flames 4-0 at Rogers Place in Edmonton on Wednesday, October 28, 2026. Connor McDavid had two assists and set an NHL record, reaching at least one assist in a 13th straight game to open a season. Tristan Jarry made 24 saves for the shutout.

McDavid sets the record

McDavid's two assists gave him an assist in 13 straight games to start the season. That is the longest such streak in NHL history, passing Sebastian Aho, Ken Linseman and Wayne Gretzky, according to Field Level Media and the Associated Press. McDavid also extended his point streak to all 13 games to open the season. He has 36 points this season, with eight goals and 28 assists, the best total in the NHL.

The record night came in a one sided Alberta rivalry game. Edmonton scored once in the first period, once in the second and twice in the third. Calgary had won four straight games before Wednesday, but the Flames never scored and lost two players during the game.

How Edmonton scored

Mathieu Joseph opened the scoring at 7:46 of the first period, on a cross ice feed from McDavid and on Edmonton's first shot of the game. Mattias Ekholm made it 2-0 at 4:52 of the second period, after returning to the lineup. Kasperi Kapanen redirected a McDavid pass for a power play goal 55 seconds into the third period. Alex Formenton scored 21 seconds later to finish the scoring at 4-0.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins also had two assists for Edmonton. Jarry's shutout was his first of the season and the 24th of his career. The win ended a two game losing streak for the Oilers and moved them to 9-2-2. Field Level Media reported that Edmonton moved back into first place in the Western Conference.

A hard night for Calgary

Calgary fell to 5-7-0 and its four game winning streak ended. Starting goaltender Devin Cooley left after the first period with a lower body injury, after Edmonton forward Colton Dach crashed into him. Cooley stopped eight of nine shots. Dustin Wolf made 20 saves in relief. Flames forward Brennan Othmann also left after the first period, after hitting the ice without his helmet at the end of a fight with Ty Emberson.

Next, Calgary hosts the Seattle Kraken on Friday. Edmonton plays at the New York Islanders on Saturday. For Edmonton, the short term question is simple: McDavid has a point and an assist in every game so far, and no player in league history had opened a season with assists in 13 straight games before Wednesday night.
