Iga Swiatek beat Magdalena Frech 6-2, 6-1 at the Wuhan Open on Wednesday, October 14, and the straight sets win carried a number that puts her ahead of Serena Williams on one of the tour's modern lists.

The seventh seed needed one hour and 43 minutes to beat her fellow Pole in the second round, after a first-round bye. It was her 149th career main-draw win at WTA 1000 events. That total passes Williams, who won 148, and gives Swiatek outright seventh place on the list since the WTA 1000 format began in 2009, according to stats provider OptaAce.

A record that stood in Serena's name

Records linked to Williams do not move often. She set the standard for power tennis over two decades, and her totals at the biggest regular tour events have held since she stepped away from the sport. Swiatek passing her at 25 says plenty about how early and how often the Polish player has won at this level.

The WTA 1000 events sit just below the four Grand Slams in the calendar. They draw the strongest fields outside the majors, and wins there are hard to stack up season after season. Reaching 149 by the age of 25 means Swiatek has been collecting them almost from the start of her career at the top.

She is a six-time Grand Slam champion, and her results at the 1000 level have matched her major form. Wednesday was another clean example. She dropped three games in total against Frech, controlled the match from the baseline, and closed it out without a third set or a late wobble.

Tougher than the score

Swiatek said after the match that it was tougher than the score suggested. That is often true in a meeting between players from the same country who know each other's games well. Frech made her work for points even as the games ran away from her in each set.

Swiatek also spoke plainly about her year. She said this season has been her toughest, with consistency harder to hold. The results explain what she means only in part. She has still won 40 matches in 2026, but the week to week level that once looked automatic has taken more work to find.

That honesty matters for what comes next. A player chasing form late in the season has two jobs at once. She has to win the match in front of her, and she has to build the rhythm she wants before the year ends. Wuhan gives her court time against strong fields on both counts.

Forty wins again

The win over Frech was also Swiatek's 40th win of 2026. It gives her at least 40 wins in five straight seasons. That run is its own kind of record. Plenty of players have one big year. Far fewer back it up five times in a row while carrying the schedule, the travel, and the target that comes with being a top seed.

The streak covers different surfaces, different coaches' plans, and different stages of her career. Through all of it, the base level has stayed high. Forty wins in a season requires deep runs at big events, and Swiatek has kept making them even in a year she describes as her hardest.

What happens next

Swiatek advances to the round of 16 in Wuhan. She will face the winner of the match between Ashlyn Krueger and Lanlana Tararudee. On paper she will start as the favorite against either player, but her own words after the Frech match were a warning against reading too much into seedings at this stage of the season.

There is also a bigger prize still in play. Elina Svitolina beat Liudmila Samsonova in three sets on the same day in Wuhan, and both Svitolina and Swiatek remain in contention for the season-ending WTA Finals. Every win this week helps that chase. A deep run in Wuhan would settle the question early and let the winner plan the final weeks with less pressure.

For now, the headline number is 149. It belongs to Swiatek alone in seventh place, one clear of Williams, with years still ahead of her to climb higher on the list.
