Musk Warns Neoclouds Face Failures as CoreWeave, Nebius Fall
CoreWeave fell 1.6 percent and Nebius fell 4 percent on Monday after Musk said more than 200 neoclouds face death and consolidation. Gartner has already warned that 80 percent of the firms could cease independent operations by 2032.

Shares of neocloud companies fell on Monday, October 26, 2026, after Elon Musk said the sector faces consolidation and failures, in a social media post on Sunday. Reuters reported that CoreWeave fell 1.6 percent, Nebius Group fell 4 percent, IREN fell 1.5 percent and Applied Digital shed 2 percent in Monday trading. The falls added to concern about the gap between what AI infrastructure companies are spending and borrowing, and the revenue that spending has produced so far.
What Musk said
Musk, the chief executive of SpaceX, said neocloud companies would face significant consolidation and failures and that SpaceX would not buy any of them, calling a purchase pointless. In his words: "200+ neoclouds are going to see guppy-level death and consolidation. Some will make it through, but not many." An earlier Reuters report on premarket trading had CoreWeave down 4.5 percent, Nebius down 3.4 percent and IREN down 3.3 percent before the open.
The debt behind the warning
Neoclouds rent out computing power for AI work and have borrowed heavily to build data centres and buy chips. Earlier this month the research firm Gartner said CoreWeave sat at the top of the 100 or so neoclouds most exposed to rising leverage, and that 80 percent of the companies could cease independent operations by 2032. Some brokerages expect AI spending to pass a trillion dollars next year. Bonds told the same story on Monday: Nebius bonds maturing in 2034 and CoreWeave bonds expiring in 2033 hit record lows. Alberto Gallo, founder of the hedge fund Andromeda Capital, told Reuters: "There is too much debt."
The pushback
Thomas Hayes, chairman at Great Hill Capital in New York, agreed with Musk: "Musk is correct. You're going to need another source of revenue and profits in order to finance these projects moving forward. The cost of capital is too high to make the returns attractive." CoreWeave answered by email. A spokesperson told Reuters the company continues to see opportunities to finance its growth, pointing to what the company called its differentiated technology. The test for the sector is now the bond market. If borrowing costs stay at record levels while AI assets lose value fast, smaller neoclouds will find it harder to refinance, which is the path Musk's post describes.
