Connor McDavid picked a loud stage for a milestone. In his 800th NHL game, on a night when all 32 teams played at once, McDavid piled up four points in the first 40 minutes and the Edmonton Oilers beat the Los Angeles Kings 4-1.
Edmonton scored three times in the first period and never let Los Angeles back in. The Kings, 0-3-2, are still looking for their first win of the season.
Three goals in one period
McDavid set up the opener midway through the first, sliding the puck to Leon Draisaitl, who buried his fourth goal of the season. Sixty seconds later the Oilers were on a power play. McDavid drove down the left wing, his shot was kicked aside by Darcy Kuemper, and Vasily Podkolzin buried the rebound for his sixth of the year.
McDavid finished the period himself. He collected a flipped puck on the fly, moved in alone and deked to his backhand to make it 3-0. Kuemper did not come back for the second period. Anton Forsberg finished the game in the Kings net.
Los Angeles got its only goal late in the second, when defenseman Brandt Clarke scored his first of the season. McDavid added his third assist of the night on Podkolzin's empty-net goal with 2:18 left, Podkolzin's second of the game.
