Jeffrey Donaldson, the former leader of the Democratic Unionist Party, was jailed for 15 years on Thursday, October 15, at Newry Crown Court for historic child sex offences. Judge Paul Ramsey handed down 11 years for the offences against one victim and a further four years for the offences against the second victim, with the terms to run one after the other.

Donaldson, 63, was convicted in June of 18 offences against two women who were children at the time: one count of rape, 13 counts of indecent assault and four counts of gross indecency. The offences were committed between 1985 and 2008. He denied every charge, and he has been in prison since the verdict, waiting for this sentence.

What the judge said

Ramsey called the case disturbing and disquieting, and described Donaldson's fall as a catastrophic descent into disgrace. He said Donaldson had doubled down on his denials since the conviction and had not offered one word of regret, apology or shame to his victims. A pre sentence report assessed him as a medium risk of reoffending. Donaldson, in a blue suit, showed no emotion as the sentence was read out. He denied all the charges at trial and is seeking to appeal his convictions.

The Democratic Unionist Party responded to the sentence by saying its former leader deserved every day of it, the Press Association reported.

The victims

Neither victim can be identified, for legal reasons. Both gave evidence at the trial. At a pre sentencing hearing last month, prosecution lawyer Rosemary Walsh said one victim described the abuse as the worst moment of her life and said it had affected all her relationships since. The other victim believed her childhood had been stolen and that she had carried feelings of shame ever since. Ramsey said he had no doubt about the permanent mark left on both women, and that the length of the abuse and the age of the victims made the sentence more severe.

A long career, ended

Donaldson was one of Northern Ireland's best known politicians when police arrested and charged him in March 2024. He stepped down as leader of the Democratic Unionist Party, the region's largest unionist party, at once. He had sat in the British parliament for Lagan Valley from 1997 to 2024, and was the region's longest serving lawmaker there when he was arrested. He was knighted for his political services in 2016, was central to negotiating a key post Brexit trade deal two months before his arrest, and asked for his knighthood to be renounced two days after his conviction.

His wife's case

A jury also found that Donaldson's wife, Eleanor Donaldson, aided and abetted her husband's offending. She was ruled unfit to stand trial on mental health grounds, so the court held a trial of the facts instead, a process that decides what happened without producing a criminal conviction. She denied the charges, and she cannot face a criminal conviction through that process.
