A Pennsylvania woman has been charged with two counts of criminal homicide in the deaths of her husband and her 3-year-old son at Great Wolf Lodge, a family resort and indoor water park in Pocono Township, in the Pocono Mountains.
Metallica Rose Harrison, 27, of Towanda, is accused of fatally stabbing her husband, Charles Harrison, and the couple's son inside their room at the resort on October 12, according to Pocono Township police and a criminal complaint filed in the case. The child is identified in the complaint only by his initials.
The call and what officers found
Police say Harrison called the Monroe County Control Center at about 3:13 p.m. on October 12 and said she needed help dying. According to the complaint, she told the dispatcher she could not find a vein in her neck to stab, and she said her husband and son were already gone.
Officers from the Pocono Township Police Department went to room 2030 at the resort in Scotrun. They found Harrison at the doorway with bleeding cuts on her left wrist and puncture wounds on her neck, the complaint says. She told officers she wanted to be with her husband and son.
Inside the room, officers found Charles Harrison and the boy dead on separate mattresses on the floor. The complaint says Charles Harrison had multiple stab wounds to the chest, and the boy appeared to have a single stab wound to the chest.
Harrison was taken to St. Luke's Monroe Campus in Stroudsburg for treatment of her injuries. On the way to the hospital, according to the complaint, she said repeatedly that she was not supposed to be here, and she spoke about working hard to be a good mother and wife and about the happy family she had pictured since childhood.
What investigators say they recovered
Investigators wrote in the affidavit that they found a large kitchen knife on the bathroom floor and a smaller knife on the bathroom sink. Both knives had teal green handles, and resort staff told police they were not the kind of knives the lodge keeps, according to the complaint as reported by Fox News. Several medication bottles were also found scattered in the room.
Police have said the killings were an isolated domestic incident. There is no threat to the public, and the violence stayed inside that one room, officials said.
What officials said
Monroe County District Attorney Mike Mancuso called the case a violent domestic tragedy at a news conference on October 13. He said the violence, while extreme, took place within the confines of the room and involved close family members.
The investigation is still going on. Police have not released a motive.
What happens next
Harrison is charged with two counts of criminal homicide and was awaiting arraignment before Magisterial District Judge Daniel Kresge, according to police. An arraignment date has not been announced in the reports. She is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
