Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas, a three-time presidential candidate and one of the most important figures in modern Mexican politics, died on Wednesday at the age of 92. President Claudia Sheinbaum announced the death, and the government confirmed it the same day. No cause of death was given. Cárdenas was the son of President Lázaro Cárdenas, one of the most popular presidents in Mexican history, and he was respected by allies and critics alike across a public life that lasted five decades.

The disputed election of 1988

Cárdenas built his name on the presidential election of 1988. He ran against Carlos Salinas, the candidate of the Institutional Revolutionary Party, known as the PRI, which had dominated Mexico since 1929. On election night the two men were running close when the government announced that the system counting the votes had crashed. When the count came back, Salinas was declared the winner. Many analysts, and Cárdenas himself, believed the PRI had rigged the vote to keep its hold on power, and the Associated Press described the defeat as widely regarded as the result of massive electoral fraud. The contest changed Mexico. It led to reforms that strengthened the opposition, and two presidential elections later, in 2000, the PRI was finally voted out of office.

Sheinbaum praised that role on social media. "His role in Mexico's contemporary history is fundamental," she said. "In 1988, he led a peaceful democratic movement that channeled the desire for change of millions of Mexicans. That historic election, in which he should have been recognized as president, marked the beginning of the democratic transformation." She also called him "a man of firm principles" and said his dignity and republican convictions remain an essential reference point for the nation.

A party of his own, and the capital

After breaking with the PRI in 1987, Cárdenas helped found the Party of the Democratic Revolution, known as the PRD, formally established in 1989. He ran for president on its ticket in 1994 and again in 2000, finishing third both times. Between those campaigns, in 1997, he became the first popularly elected mayor of Mexico City, and the capital stayed in PRD hands for a long run after him. Historian Lorenzo Meyer told Reuters it was Cárdenas who finally galvanized leftist opposition to the PRI, adding: "And he had the capacity to mobilise."

Engineer, senator, governor

Cárdenas was born in Mexico City on May 1, 1934, in the first year of his father's six-year term. His father championed land reform and nationalized the oil industry in 1938. The younger Cárdenas trained as a civil engineer, earning his degree in 1957, and worked as a planner and hydraulic engineer before entering politics in 1976 as a senator for Michoacán. He served as governor of Michoacán from 1980 to 1986, when his reputation for honesty set him apart from a party increasingly linked to graft. His break with the PRI began in late 1986, when he helped form the Democratic Current, a faction calling for a more open way of choosing the party's presidential candidate. The leadership ignored those calls, and leading members left the party in 1987.

Later years and tributes

The PRD lost ground after Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who had followed Cárdenas as mayor of Mexico City, split away to found the Morena party, which became the main force on the Mexican left and carried him to the presidency in 2018. Cárdenas stayed true to his own line. In 2014 he resigned from the PRD he had founded because the party governed the state of Guerrero when 43 students disappeared there, and he later distanced himself from López Obrador after López Obrador became president.

Tributes came from across the political divide. Former President Vicente Fox, whose election in 2000 ended PRI rule, wrote that "we were political adversaries but something bigger united us: the conviction that Mexico deserved complete democracy." López Obrador called Cárdenas a "pioneer of the democratic movement" and wrote: "Without him, the country's political reality would be different."

Cárdenas is survived by three children from his marriage to Celeste Batel, who died before him. One of them, Lázaro Cárdenas Batel, is also a politician and has held senior roles under both López Obrador and Sheinbaum.
