The Oklahoma City Thunder and guard Cason Wallace agreed to a five-year, $139 million rookie scale contract extension on Sunday, his agents told ESPN. The deal beats the Monday deadline for rookie extensions and keeps one of the best young perimeter defenders in the league in Oklahoma City for the long term.

Agents Jeff Schwartz, Max Lipsett and Marcus Monk of Excel Sports Management told ESPN reporter Shams Charania about the agreement on Sunday night, and The Oklahoman confirmed the deal the same night. Wallace, 22, was set to become a restricted free agent next summer if no deal had been reached by the deadline.

Paid for defense first

Wallace made the All-Defensive second team last season, his third in the league. He averaged career highs of 8.6 points and 2.6 assists a game, added 3.1 rebounds, and led the NBA with 150 total steals. He started 58 of the 77 games he played.

Wallace was the No. 10 pick in the 2023 draft, selected by Dallas before his draft rights were traded to Oklahoma City. He has played 227 career games with 114 starts, and he has appeared in all 48 of the Thunder playoff games played during his time with the team. In October 2025 the Thunder exercised his $7.4 million club option for the 2026-27 season, which set up this extension year.

General manager Sam Presti made the team's view clear before training camp. "I think the greatest sign of respect we could have shown Cason is moving Lu in that trade," Presti said, pointing to the summer deal that sent longtime starting wing Luguentz Dort to Atlanta.

The Dort trade opened the job

Oklahoma City traded Dort to the Atlanta Hawks this summer in a cost-cutting move. The Thunder also traded Aaron Wiggins and Isaiah Joe in separate deals, taking back seven second-round picks and no players, according to The Oklahoman. Those moves left Wallace as the team's top defender at the point of attack and put him in line for a full-time starting job next to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the league's two-time most valuable player.

That starting role is what this extension pays for. Wallace guards the opponent's best backcourt player, makes enough shots to stay on the floor in playoff games, and does not need the ball in his hands to change a game at the defensive end.

An expensive core gets more expensive

With Wallace signed, 13 of the 14 players on the Thunder roster are under contract for the 2027-28 season, ESPN reported. That is also the season when the four-year, $285 million supermax extension of Gilgeous-Alexander begins. ESPN analyst Bobby Marks projects Oklahoma City at about $26 million over the second apron in 2027-28, with a tax bill that could pass $200 million.

For now, the Thunder have chosen to pay to keep this group together. Wallace's deal closes the last big piece of roster business before the regular season opens this week, and it locks in the defensive core of a team that expects to contend again.
