A short life for a meme coin fund
Bitwise launched the fund on November 26, 2025. A Bitwise affiliate provided 2.5 million dollars in seed funding. The fund charged an expense ratio of 0.34 percent.
Assets shrank fast. By early September, assets had fallen to about 688,000 dollars. By October 7, 2026, assets stood at 725,870 dollars, according to SoSoValue data cited by The Block. At wind-down, the fund held about 8.2 million DOGE.
Net outflows since launch exceeded 1.3 million dollars. Trading stayed thin. September 2026 trading volume was only 51,480 dollars. In its first week, volume was about 3 million dollars. October saw zero daily net inflows into Dogecoin ETFs.
How the closure was announced
Bitwise announced the liquidation in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Form 8-K, on September 10, 2026. A Form 25 filing to delist the fund followed.
The dates now run in order. Final trading day is October 14. Final net asset value is October 21. Cash distribution is expected on or around October 22.
What the chief executive said
Bitwise chief executive Hunter Horsley spoke about the fund at Digital Asset Summit 2026 Asia, in remarks reported on October 8 by The Block. He called the outcome tragic. He said he personally likes Dogecoin and holds it. He said ETF buyers did not want it as a fund product.
Horsley pointed to a contrast inside his own firm. The Bitwise Solana Staking ETF, ticker BSOL, reached 1.3 billion dollars in net assets. One fund found a large base of buyers through the ETF format. The Dogecoin fund did not.
What is not closing
Two other Dogecoin products stay open. Grayscale Dogecoin Trust is a separate product and is not closing. The 21Shares Dogecoin ETF is also separate and is not closing. The closure covers BWOW only.
For holders, the choice is simple and time-bound. Sell by the October 14 close for the market price, or hold and receive cash based on the October 21 net asset value, expected on or around October 22. No action is required for the cash payout.
Price moves were not the story on Wednesday. On October 14, Bitcoin traded near 81,900 dollars, Ethereum traded near 2,443 dollars, and Dogecoin traded near 8.2 cents. The news was the end of trading in a fund that launched with 2.5 million dollars in seed money and closed with about 8.2 million DOGE and thin volume.
