Key points

  • An alligator swallowed an Xbox Series X, and the console still works.
  • Creature animatronics specialists at John Nolan Studio built the piece through 3D modeling, sculpting and fabrication, Xbox said in its Xbox Wire announcement.
  • There are three ways in, all on social media.

An alligator swallowed an Xbox Series X, and the console still works. That is the whole pitch for the Xbox Series X-BITE, a one-of-a-kind custom console Microsoft unveiled on November 3. The machine sits inside a sculpted alligator that measures more than five feet from snout to tail. The console shows through an illuminated Xbox Nexus in the creature's body. A custom wireless controller with bite marks rests between its jaws. Xbox is giving the only one away in a sweepstakes that closes at 11:59 p.m. PT on November 10.

Creature animatronics specialists at John Nolan Studio built the piece through 3D modeling, sculpting and fabrication, Xbox said in its Xbox Wire announcement. The studio's past work includes The Witcher and Jurassic World Dominion, according to Polygon's report. The alligator has Xbox-green irises with Nexus-inspired pupils. Microsoft is clear on two points: the piece is a custom fabrication, and no actual alligators were used or harmed. Polygon reported that Xbox recommends the console for display purposes.

How to enter

There are three ways in, all on social media. Follow the official Xbox account on X, Instagram or TikTok, repost the sweepstakes post from a public account, and add the hashtag #XbiteSweepstakes to the repost yourself. The sweepstakes opened at 9:00 a.m. PT on November 3 and runs through November 10. It is open to legal residents of the 50 US states and Washington, D.C., aged 18 and over. No purchase is necessary. Only one Series X-BITE exists, and it is not for sale.

Why it matters

The Florida timing is not subtle, and reporters have said so plainly. TweakTown reported that the alligator is a Florida-themed nod to Grand Theft Auto 6, a game Xbox cannot promote directly because Sony holds the GTA 6 marketing partnership. Xbox never names the game in its announcement. It says only that Xbox is heading to Florida this November and that the console is ready to play some of the biggest games of the year. GTA 6 is set in Leonida, a fictional version of Florida, and launches on November 19, nine days after the sweepstakes closes. That chain of facts is reporting and inference by gaming outlets, not a claim Xbox itself has made, and readers should hold it at that distance.

The context

Custom console giveaways are a standing Xbox habit, but this one is built to travel. A five-foot alligator photographs well, fits a short video, and gives every gaming outlet the same picture on the same day. It also lands in the busiest gaming month of the year, with the GTA 6 launch on November 19 and pre-loads opening November 10, a date this newsroom has already reported. The sweepstakes deadline, November 10, sits on the same calendar square.

What happens next

Entries close at 11:59 p.m. PT on Tuesday, November 10. After that, the story is the winner's shelf: a working console inside a five-foot reptile is either the best object in a game room or a storage problem with teeth. Either way, there is exactly one of them, and the entry costs a repost.
