Google Tells Schools Search Comes With AI, or Not at All

Google will switch off Gemini and Search by default for K-12 student accounts and let each school turn them back on. But there is no AI-free version of Search, so a school that bans AI entirely loses the search engine too.

Students at schools that ban artificial intelligence will lose access to Google Search on their school accounts. Google announced the change on Tuesday, November 3, reversing a rollout that had switched its Gemini chatbot on for many younger students in August and drawn months of complaints from educators, parents and child safety groups.

In a blog post, Chris Phillips, Google's vice president and general manager of education, wrote that Gemini, Gemini Notebook, Gemini in Classroom and Google Search "will be entirely off for K-12 student accounts until school administrators explicitly turn them on." Each service can be switched on separately, and Google clarified in a post on X the same day that schools can turn on one, two or all of the services individually.

The catch is inside Search itself

The limit sits in what Search has become. Phillips told The New York Times that "Search and AI are deeply integrated," and he told Chalkbeat that a school which simply wants AI off "has the choice to not have Search on at all." The Search a school can switch back on still carries AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google offers no version of Search with the AI stripped out. Students at a school that keeps AI off will see a message saying Search is not available on their account, according to reporting of the briefing by the Associated Press and TechCrunch.

The announcement follows a backlash that began in August, when Google turned Gemini on by default for many K-12 students who use Google Classroom. Until August, Gemini had been limited to students aged 18 and older, the Associated Press reported. In July, the nonprofit Common Sense Media gave Google's AI search features its lowest rating, "Unacceptable Risk." On October 26, Senators Richard Blumenthal and Josh Hawley wrote to Google asking why its AI features were turned on by default on school devices, and set a November 2 deadline for a reply.

A tutor mode is the other half of the plan

Google paired the new controls with a teaching tool called Guided Learning, which coaches a student through a problem step by step with questions instead of handing over a finished answer. Guided Learning became available in Google Classroom worldwide on November 3. A pilot version inside Search starts later in November at selected schools in the United States.

Schools that allow AI will get a choice of search styles in early 2027, between standard Search with its AI answers and a version routed through Guided Learning. Google has published no start date for the new off-by-default settings. It said it will share specifics with schools in the coming months before the changes roll out, and The New York Times reported the switch is expected early next year.

For districts, the decision is now a package deal. They can keep AI out of student accounts entirely, accept Search with AI built in, or land somewhere between, product by product and grade by grade. What they cannot pick is the plain search engine schools used for two decades, because Google no longer sells that product to them.
