Walter Koenig, the actor who played Pavel Chekov in the original Star Trek series, died on Sunday, October 25, 2026, at his home in North Hollywood. He was 90. His representative told TMZ that he died of old age and that his daughter, Danielle, and his niece were by his side. Consequence, citing a Galactic Productions statement, reported the same account.
George Takei, who played Sulu alongside Koenig and chose him as best man at his 2008 wedding, paid tribute on Monday. "Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades," Takei wrote. "Walter was more than Chekov. He was a writer, a teacher, a thoughtful man, and a loyal friend. To the fans who loved him for so many years, thank you. He loved you too." He closed: "Rest well, my dear friend. Keep navigating a steady course."
Chekov and the Enterprise
Walter Marvin Koenig was born in Chicago on September 14, 1936, to Russian Jewish immigrant parents, Isadore and Sarah. The family name was originally Koenigsberg. He studied psychology at UCLA and took up acting on a professor's advice. He made his screen debut in 1963, in the first two episodes of General Hospital.
Koenig joined Star Trek in 1967, in the second season premiere, "Amok Time," and played Chekov in 36 episodes. He was brought in to draw younger viewers and resembled Davy Jones of the Monkees. His Russian accent for Chekov was based on his father's speech. Putting a Russian officer, portrayed as a hero, on the bridge of the Enterprise during the Cold War was a bold choice for American television at the time.
He returned as Chekov in the six Star Trek films with the original cast and came back again with a cameo in Star Trek: Generations. Chekov did not appear in the animated series, but Koenig wrote its episode "The Infinite Vulcan." In 2023 he made a voice cameo in the final episode of Star Trek: Picard as President Anton Chekov.
A second life on Babylon 5
Koenig's other best known role was Alfred Bester, the powerful and menacing telepath he played in 12 episodes of Babylon 5. He called playing Bester one of the best and most satisfying experiences he ever had. His other credits included Columbo, Ironside and a cameo as himself on Futurama in 2002, and he also wrote for television, including Land of the Lost.
Looking back in 2021, Koenig said: "One of the great pluses about my association with 'Star Trek,' that I got to be part of something that, in a way, is trying to encourage that we look at mankind as one great big soul and that we all have something to contribute."
Fans, family and a late honour
Koenig stayed close to Star Trek fans for decades on the convention circuit. His representative said he "shared his kindness, wit, and appreciation with everyone fortunate enough to meet him. He understood what Star Trek meant to people and embraced the community that grew around it." The representative also pointed to a recent honour, his win at the 2026 Independent Shorts Awards for his performance in the film "Mr. Fleischmann." Koenig turned 90 on September 14, 2026.
He is survived by his daughter, Danielle. His wife, Judy, to whom he was married for nearly 60 years, died in 2022. Their son, Andrew, also an actor, died in 2010.
