Chris Brown was spared an immediate prison sentence in Britain on Monday, October 26, 2026, after a judge gave him an eight-month suspended sentence for attacking a producer with a tequila bottle in a London nightclub in 2023. Brown, 37, had pleaded guilty to a charge of affray over the attack on Abraham Diaw at the Tape nightclub in February 2023. Reuters reported the sentence from Southwark Crown Court in London, and CNN and USA Today confirmed the outcome the same morning.

The eight-month sentence was suspended for a year. Brown had faced up to three years in prison after pleading guilty to a count of affray in July for the attack on the dance floor of Tape, a private club in Mayfair.

What the court heard

Video footage played in court showed Brown having to be pulled away from the victim, his former friend Abraham Diaw, after striking him twice in the head with a bottle. Prosecutor Heidi Stonecliffe told the court that Diaw was discharged from the hospital with head and knee injuries. Stonecliffe said: "By any circumstances, when one watches that footage, it is Mr. Brown that moves first."

Judge Tony Baumgartner said the repeated use of a glass bottle in that way, especially aimed at the head, was plainly dangerous and carried the risk of a more serious injury than Diaw ultimately sustained. The judge said Brown did not qualify for a custodial sentence because he had pleaded guilty and there were several mitigating circumstances, including stable employment and charity work. He acknowledged Brown's previous convictions but said Brown had maintained a clean record in recent years.

In return for the guilty plea, prosecutors dropped charges of assault, attempting to cause grievous bodily harm and having an offensive weapon, a bottle. Brown's defence lawyer, Sallie Bennett-Jenkins, called the episode an ugly and unattractive incident that would undoubtedly have caused distress to those present, and said Brown offered a profound apology to all those present.

The co-defendant, the bail, and the fans outside

Brown's friend and vocal coach Omololu Akinlolu, 40, also pleaded guilty to affray and was given a four-month suspended sentence.

Brown left the United Kingdom after the brawl. He was arrested in May 2025 at a Manchester hotel after flying to the city for a concert, and he had been free on bail of 5 million pounds (6.7 million dollars), which allowed him to tour Europe and North America over the past two summers.

Outside the courthouse, Brown was cheered by fans who had come from as far as Italy and the Netherlands. Some fans had lined up outside court about an hour before the building opened. Brown thanked the judge before leaving the dock and nodded toward his supporters in the public gallery. Outside, he blew a kiss to one fan and appeared to sign an autograph for another.

Brown is a two-time Grammy winner. He rose to stardom as a teen in 2005, won his first Grammy for best R and B album in 2011 for F.A.M.E., and won his second in the same category for 11:11 (Deluxe) in 2025.
