Defence Minister David McGuinty said late on Saturday that people were killed and injured in the incident at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright. "I'm saddened to share that there have been both fatalities and injuries as a result of an incident on the base," McGuinty said, the Associated Press and CNN reported.
McGuinty gave no numbers for the dead or injured and did not say what caused the incident. He described the situation as "very, very active and delicate," said the Royal Canadian Mounted Police are involved, and said an investigation will be launched soon. The fire was still underway on the ground, he said, and the Canadian Armed Forces, the federal government, and provincial and local authorities were working together to mobilize support.
CNN reported that firefighters were still working to keep the blaze from reaching residential areas. The Municipal District of Wainwright said the fire had crossed the base fence and was being actively managed, with firefighters from multiple jurisdictions responding. No evacuation order had been issued. Officials asked residents to stay away from the area, keep roads clear, and avoid the Wainwright Health Centre except for critical medical needs.
Opposition leader Pierre Poilievre said he had spoken to McGuinty and Prime Minister Mark Carney about the fire, thanked emergency responders, and asked people to pray for Wainwright.
A serious incident at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in east-central Alberta caused a major fire on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2026, Prime Minister Mark Carney said. The fire spread fast in high winds and crossed from near the base into the Municipal District of Wainwright No. 61, the district said. Emergency crews were working on the fire on Saturday evening, and no evacuation orders had been issued, Reuters reported.
Carney posted on X at 8:05 p.m. Eastern time. "A serious incident creating a major fire has occurred at CFB Wainwright, in Alberta," he wrote. "Our thoughts are with all the brave women and men affected." Carney said Ottawa is working closely with the Alberta government and local authorities, and that he and Premier Danielle Smith are in close contact, as are their ministers and officials.
About 10 minutes later, Smith posted on X that her government is learning of a significant and tragic fire at CFB Wainwright that is affecting many of Alberta's military personnel. She thanked the first responders and all those providing care and support to those affected. Defence Minister David McGuinty said on X at 8:54 p.m. Eastern time that he had been briefed by the Canadian Armed Forces on the major incident and that his thoughts are with the Armed Forces members in Wainwright.
Fire crosses into the rural district
In a Facebook post headed "INCIDENT UPDATE #001," the Municipal District of Wainwright No. 61 said: "A large fire originating near the Canadian Forces Base has spread rapidly due to high winds and has crossed into the Municipal District of Wainwright No. 61." Reuters reported that the municipality said the fire crossed the base fence into the nearby district earlier in the day and was being actively managed.
The fire also shut a voting site. Elections Alberta said it had been informed of the large fire and had closed the advance voting location at the Wainwright Communiplex for Alberta's provincial referendum. Voters in Electoral Division 86 can still vote in advance at the Border Inn in Lloydminster or the Vermilion Elks Hall in Vermilion, the agency said. Referendum day is Monday, Oct. 19.
What officials have not said
National Defence told the Chatsworth Banner by email on Saturday evening: "We are aware of an incident in Wainwright, Alberta. The safety and security of our personnel, their families, and members of the surrounding community remain our highest priority." The department said it is closely monitoring the situation and will provide more information as it becomes available and can be confirmed.
That statement did not give a cause, say whether anyone was injured, or name the units involved. As of Saturday evening, officials had not announced what caused the fire, how many people were hurt, or whether a training exercise was under way. Some reports have described an explosion. No official source has confirmed that. McGuinty later confirmed fatalities and injuries, but officials still have not given casualty numbers or a cause. No provincial emergency alert was active for the area as of about 10:05 p.m. Eastern time.
CFB Wainwright, about 200 kilometres southeast of Edmonton, is a major Canadian Army training base used by units from across the country. Reuters called it one of the busiest Army bases in Canada. The Associated Press reported that the base is home to the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre, which conducts battlefield exercises, and the 3rd Canadian Division Training Centre. This story will be updated as officials release more information.
