Leeds Draw 1-1 With Manchester United as Calvert-Lewin Cancels Out Mbeumo

Leeds United drew 1-1 with Manchester United at Elland Road on Sunday, as Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored early in the second half to cancel out Bryan Mbeumo's first half opener. The result extended Manchester United's winless run and left Leeds unbeaten at home.

Mbeumo put the visitors ahead in the 35th minute. He slipped away from James Justin to turn in a low cross from Youri Tielemans, scoring his fourth goal of the season, the Press Association reported. It was the first time Manchester United had led at half time in a Premier League game this season.

Calvert-Lewin levels after Martinez injury

Lisandro Martinez started for Manchester United despite being fined in midweek after criticising the club's hierarchy, but he lasted only 45 minutes. He went off injured at half time, Noussair Mazraoui came on, and head coach Michael Carrick switched to a back three.

Leeds levelled shortly after the break. Tarik Muharemovic was first to meet a corner, the ball ran loose, and Calvert-Lewin beat Mbeumo to it and finished past Senne Lammens. Neither side found a winner after that. Bruno Fernandes pulled a shot wide for the visitors, and Anton Stach could not keep a first time strike down for Leeds.

The game had started in a rush of bookings more than chances. Fernandes and Gabriel Gudmundsson were both shown yellow cards, Ethan Ampadu made his 100th appearance as Leeds captain, and goalkeeper Lammens saved well from a downward header by Nico Elvedi. Mbeumo also headed wide when unmarked before he scored.

What the result means

Sky Sports reported that Manchester United have one Premier League win from seven games and none since August. AllFootball reported the draw made it six games without a win in all competitions, and put Manchester United 13th in the table. Leeds sit seventh, three points above them, and remain unbeaten at home in all competitions since March.

On the chances created after the equaliser, a draw was a fair result for both sides in a loud and physical derby. Leeds are still waiting for a first home win over Manchester United since September 2002. For Carrick, a point at a loud Elland Road stopped a run of defeats, but it did not end the pressure that has built during a week that included a loss to Atletico Madrid and the Martinez interview.
