Brighton beat Crystal Palace 5-0 at the Amex Stadium on Sunday, scoring three goals in the first 10 minutes of the M23 derby and moving up to second in the Premier League table. The second goal, scored by Diego Gomez from the halfway line in the seventh minute, was the longest range goal in the league since 2017, according to Opta figures reported by USA Today.

Three goals in 10 minutes

Palace defender Jaydee Canvot headed the ball into his own net after four minutes to give Brighton the lead. Three minutes later, Gomez collected a pass from Olivier Boscagli near the halfway line after Adam Wharton lost the ball, took one touch, saw goalkeeper Walter Benitez off his line and shot from just past the midfield stripe. The ball sailed over Benitez and into the net.

Yasin Ayari made it 3-0 in the 10th minute, finishing low into the bottom corner after a pass from Charalampos Kostoulas. TalkSPORT reported that Brighton are the first team to score three goals in the opening 10 minutes of a Premier League match since Newcastle United did it against Tottenham Hotspur in April 2023.

Gomez takes the headlines

Opta measured the Gomez goal at 51 metres. USA Today reported that it is the farthest goal scored in the Premier League since Wayne Rooney scored from 58 metres for Everton against West Ham United in November 2017. Former Arsenal winger Perry Groves, speaking on talkSPORT, said: "Do not worry about goal of the season. We have just seen it."

It was the first goal of the season for Gomez, a 23 year old Paraguay international. TalkSPORT reported that he joined Brighton from Inter Miami in January 2025 and has now scored 12 goals in 66 appearances for the club.

Second half, same story

Kostoulas added the fourth goal in the 49th minute, finishing after a ricochet inside the Palace box. Jack Hinshelwood, who had come on as a substitute in the 71st minute, tapped in the fifth from close range in the 84th minute.

The result continued a strong start to the season for Fabian Hurzeler and his team, who had won four of their first six league matches before Sunday. Before this match, Brighton had scored 18 league goals, the most of any team in the division, according to The Sun's live coverage of the day's fixtures. Palace, managed by Pierre Sage, started the day in 12th place and played with Benitez, their backup goalkeeper, in goal.
