The Houston Texans beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 34-31 at Wembley Stadium in London on Sunday, with Ka'imi Fairbairn kicking a 49-yard field goal as time expired to settle a Week 6 game that swung back and forth all afternoon.
Jacksonville kicker Cam Little had tied the game at 31-31 with a 60-yard field goal with 1:55 left. Houston got the ball back, and C.J. Stroud moved the Texans down the field, finding Woody Marks on a third-down catch that carried into Jacksonville territory. The Texans ran the clock down, and Fairbairn made the kick with no time left.
Hunter did everything for Jacksonville
Travis Hunter nearly won the game for the Jaguars on his own. The two-way player caught a 7-yard touchdown pass from Trevor Lawrence early in the fourth quarter to cut Houston's lead to 31-28. On the next Houston drive, with the Texans inside the 5-yard line, Hunter intercepted Stroud in the end zone with 3:53 left to keep Jacksonville alive and set up Little's tying kick.
NBC Sports reported that Hunter is just the fifth player in the Super Bowl era to record an interception and a touchdown catch in the same game. It was Stroud's first interception of the season, according to NBC Sports, and Hunter's second.
The effort still ended in a loss. Lawrence threw four touchdown passes for Jacksonville, two of them to running back Bhayshul Tuten, but the Jaguars defense could not get the stop it needed on the final drive.
Touchdowns traded all afternoon
Houston led 17-14 at halftime. Stroud threw two touchdown passes to tight end Foster Moreau in the first half, the second of them in the final seconds of the second quarter after a long completion and a pass interference call put the ball at the 1-yard line. Moreau had never scored twice in a game before in his career, according to Texans Wire.
Stroud added a third touchdown pass in the third quarter, a 13-yard throw to Jaylin Noel on a drive that a 12-men-on-the-field penalty against Jacksonville kept alive. Running back Jawhar Jordan scored on a 25-yard run late in the third quarter, his first touchdown in the NFL, to make it 31-21.
Jacksonville answered each time. Tight end Nate Boerkircher scored his first touchdown in the NFL on a 1-yard pass from Lawrence in the third quarter, and Tuten's two receiving touchdowns kept the Jaguars close before Hunter took over in the fourth.
Stroud finished with 24 completions for 314 yards, three touchdowns and one interception, according to theScore.
What the result means
The win is Houston's second in a row after an 0-4 start, and it lifts the Texans to 2-4. Jacksonville falls to 4-2 but stays on top of the AFC South. Both teams now head back to the United States, with the division race tighter than it looked when they left for London.
