Knueppel Leaves Season Debut After Six Minutes With Leg Soreness

Key points

  • Kon Knueppel's season debut lasted six minutes.
  • Knueppel had missed Charlotte's first eight games with a left hamstring injury he picked up in the preseason.
  • Knueppel scored three points before he left, all of them at the free throw line.

Kon Knueppel's season debut lasted six minutes. The Charlotte Hornets forward left Wednesday night's game against the Brooklyn Nets at Barclays Center, on November 4, 2026, with soreness in his left leg and did not return, the team announced during the game.

Knueppel had missed Charlotte's first eight games with a left hamstring injury he picked up in the preseason. He started on Wednesday, and the debut went wrong almost at once. With 6 minutes 9 seconds left in the first quarter, he dribbled the ball off his own leg while bringing it up the court and pulled up in clear discomfort. Sion James replaced him, and Knueppel went straight to the locker room.

Three points, then out

Knueppel scored three points before he left, all of them at the free throw line. He missed his only shot from the field and had two turnovers. Charlotte's public relations staff posted the update during the game, saying Knueppel had left in the first quarter with soreness in his left leg and would not return. The team confirmed at halftime that his night was over.

The wording matters. The Hornets called it soreness in his left leg, not a new tear, and they gave no timetable on Wednesday night. But it is the same leg that cost him the first eight games of the season, and a player fresh off a hamstring injury leaving inside six minutes is the outcome Charlotte feared most when it cleared him to start.

Knueppel, a former Duke player in his second NBA season, was a starter Charlotte planned around this year. The Hornets opened the season by winning three of their first four games, then hit a four game slide while he sat, which made his return the most watched part of Wednesday's game in Brooklyn.

A rough night all round for Charlotte

Charlotte lost the game as well. Brooklyn won 114-104 at Barclays Center, dropping the Hornets to 3-6 while the Nets improved to 2-6. Charlotte also lost Coby White for a stretch after he took a hit to the face, although White returned and started the second half.

The Hornets are back home on Friday, when Boston visits Charlotte for an NBA Cup group game. Whether Knueppel plays in it is now the question hanging over the week. Charlotte waited eight games to get him back. After six minutes, the wait starts again.
