The BSE Sensex crossed 80,000 in intraday trade on Friday, November 6, 2026, reclaiming a level it last touched on March 5, 2026. The index hit an intraday high of 80,080.59 and stood at 80,027.74 at 1:11 pm IST, up 717.73 points or 0.90 percent from its previous close of 79,310.01, The Hindu BusinessLine reported.

The Nifty 50 moved with it. The Nifty rose 161.60 points or 0.66 percent to 24,698, touching an intraday high of 24,702.60 against a previous close of 24,536.60.

The rally kept building into the afternoon. By 2:08 pm IST the Sensex had risen 1,078.25 points or 1.36 percent to 80,388.26, with an intraday high of 80,512.92, and the Nifty stood at 24,747.40, up 210.80 points or 0.86 percent, according to Upstox. These are intraday levels from a market that was still open, not closing levels.

Rising against a global selloff

Indian shares rose on a day when the global backdrop pointed the other way. Wall Street had fallen hard overnight, with the Nasdaq down 5.52 percent, the S and P 500 down 4.36 percent and the Dow Jones down 3.45 percent, after Democratic gains in the US midterm elections set off an unwinding of AI and semiconductor trades, BusinessLine reported.

Mumbai ignored that lead. Buying in large banks and heavyweight stocks carried both indexes through levels they had not seen in eight months.

Foreign buyers lead the way

Foreign institutional investors bought Rs 14,974.68 crore of equities on November 5, their largest single day net inflow in nearly six years. They were net buyers for a fifth straight session, according to DSIJ and IANS reports.

"This ongoing rally has fundamental support from impressive earnings growth which has come better than expected," said Dr V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments Limited, speaking to BusinessLine.

Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, pointed to the currency. "A firmer rupee, if sustained, could offer some relief on the imported inflation front," he told BusinessLine.

Who moved on the day

Mahindra and Mahindra led the Nifty gainers, up 3.55 percent to Rs 3,238.50. Titan rose 2.52 percent, and HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank each gained 2.43 percent, BusinessLine reported. Shriram Finance fell 2.42 percent and Hindalco shed 1.48 percent.

The road back to 80,000

The Sensex last closed above 80,000 at 80,015.90 on March 5, 2026, before an eight month correction pulled the market down. Analysts attributed the recovery to earnings growth, large cap valuations and renewed foreign participation, BusinessLine reported.

Friday's trade puts the index back above a level investors watched all year. Whether it holds will be settled at the close and in the sessions that follow, with foreign buying and company earnings setting the tone.
