CHELSEA, Massachusetts. Kayem Foods Inc. is recalling more than 1.5 million pounds of ready-to-eat meat and poultry products after federal officials said the food may have been stored at unsafe temperatures in a warehouse cooler.
The recall covers bacon, hot dogs, sausage, turkey breasts, hams and other ready-to-eat products, more than 100 items in all, the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) of the US Department of Agriculture announced on Saturday, October 17. The products were made between March 31 and October 7, 2026. Some carry long shelf lives, so officials say packages may still be in home refrigerators and freezers.
How to spot the recalled products
The recalled items carry the establishment numbers EST. M/P 7839, EST. P 20935A and EST. M 9520 inside the USDA mark of inspection. Retailer recall notices list products sold under the Kayem and Al Fresco names, among them franks, several kinds of bacon, chicken sausage, breakfast sausage and chicken meatballs, with all best-by dates included. The products went to retail stores and foodservice locations across the United States, and some were shipped to Hong Kong.
A warm delivery raised the alarm
The problem surfaced on October 1, when a retail customer complained that a delivery had arrived warm. Kayem checked its storage and found that products had been kept in a warehouse cooler where temperatures had moved out of range. Retailer notices describe the risk as possible contamination with pathogens after the cooling failure, because ready-to-eat food held too warm can become unsafe even when it looks and smells normal.
No illnesses reported so far
FSIS says there have been no confirmed reports of illness from eating these products. Anyone who is worried about an illness should contact a health care provider, the agency says.
Officials urge people who bought the recalled products not to eat them. Throw them away, or return them to the place of purchase. One retailer, Big Y, told customers they can bring the products back for a full refund, and shoppers who already threw the food out can bring proof of purchase instead. Kayem lists a customer service line for questions at 617-889-1600, extension 247, staffed Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern.
FSIS says it will run routine checks to confirm that Kayem has notified its customers and that the recalled food is being pulled from sale.
