HCA Healthcare reported third quarter results ahead of Wall Street expectations on Tuesday, with revenue of $19.85 billion for the quarter ended in September 2026, up from $19.16 billion a year earlier.
The hospital operator posted adjusted earnings of $7.22 a share, beating the Zacks consensus estimate of $6.74 and up from $6.96 a share a year ago. Diluted earnings per share on a reported basis were $7.27. Net income attributable to HCA Healthcare was $1.58 billion.
Volumes rise, payer mix weighs
Same facility equivalent admissions grew 3.0 percent in the quarter, a sign that demand for medical services stayed firm. Reuters reported that the company beat profit estimates helped by that demand, despite a rise in uninsured patients who had lost coverage through health insurance exchanges.
The shift toward uninsured patients weighed on margins. The company estimated an unfavorable pre tax impact of about $400 million from the change in payer mix, which kept stronger admissions from turning into faster profit growth. Same facility inpatient and outpatient surgeries declined in the quarter.
Outlook held in upper half
HCA said its full year operating results should land in the upper half of its existing guidance ranges. The company expects full year revenue between $77 billion and $79.5 billion.
HCA is based in Nashville, Tennessee, and is one of the largest for profit hospital operators in the United States. Its results are watched as a guide to hospital volumes, and to the effect that coverage losses are having on hospital finances across the sector.
Reading the quarter
Zacks noted that the revenue figure also topped its consensus estimate, by 2.50 percent, and that the earnings surprise for the quarter was 7.12 percent. HCA has now beaten the consensus earnings estimate in three of the last four quarters, according to Zacks. The gap between the reported earnings per share of $7.27 and the adjusted figure of $7.22 reflects items the company removes from its adjusted results, including gains on sales of facilities, according to the disclosures in its release. HCA reported on a crowded morning for third quarter results in the United States, with Coca-Cola, Boeing, PayPal and UPS also reporting before the opening bell, and with the Federal Reserve starting a two day policy meeting on the same day. Hospital results are also being read against the wider earnings season, in which investors are weighing whether higher patient volumes can offset the cost of care for patients who arrive without insurance coverage.
