Bournemouth beat AC Milan 3-0 at the Vitality Stadium on Thursday night, the headline result of Europa League Matchday 3, on a night when Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan was sent off in the first half for shoving United States midfielder Tyler Adams in the face.
Justin Kluivert put Bournemouth ahead from the penalty spot after eight minutes. The match turned in the 27th minute. As Bournemouth lined up a corner, Adams stood in front of Maignan, and the Milan goalkeeper pushed him in the face with both hands. Referee Vassilis Fotias showed a straight red card, confirmed by VAR, and awarded a second penalty. Adams was booked for his part in the incident. Backup goalkeeper Lorenzo Torriani came on, and Marcus Tavernier converted the penalty to make it 2-0. Bournemouth added a third goal in the second half to complete a 3-0 win over the 10-man Italian side.
Juventus fight back, Leverkusen stay top
Juventus dropped their first points of the campaign after coming from behind to draw 2-2 at home to Rennes. Zeki Celik gave Juventus the lead in the fifth minute, but Musa Al-Taamari levelled from close range 10 minutes later, his first goal in the competition. Boulaye Dia put Rennes ahead from the penalty spot two minutes before half time. Nick Woltemade equalised from the spot in the 67th minute, and Juventus thought they had won it in the 88th minute when Jhon Lucumi scored from close range, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside. The draw spared Juventus a second straight defeat after Sunday's 3-0 home loss to Lazio in Serie A.
Bayer Leverkusen went top of the league phase table with a third straight win, beating OFI Crete 2-0 away. Jonas Hofmann, a surprise starter after an injury to Martin Terrier, scored twice in three minutes, in the 35th and 37th minutes. Leverkusen have nine points and lead Ferencvaros on goal difference. Ferencvaros beat Torreense 4-1. Sunderland, also chasing a third win, took a second-minute lead against Lech Poznan through Timur Tutierov, but Leo Bengtsson equalised in the 70th minute for a 1-1 draw. Sunderland have seven points, level with Juventus.
Goals across the late games
Real Sociedad recorded the biggest win of the night, beating Lillestrom 6-0 in Norway, three goals in each half. Benfica won 4-1 away to Omonia Nicosia after the teams went in level at 1-1 at half time. Hoffenheim beat Lyon 3-0 in Sinsheim, Anderlecht won 3-0 away to Jagiellonia Bialystok, and Celta Vigo came away from Celtic Park with a 2-1 win over Celtic. Crystal Palace drew 2-2 away to Besiktas in Istanbul, Olympiacos beat Sparta Prague 1-0 in Piraeus, and Levski Sofia beat Viktoria Plzen 2-1. In the early games, AZ Alkmaar won 4-0 away to Ararat-Armenia, NEC Nijmegen won 4-2 at Dinamo Zagreb, Union Saint-Gilloise beat Hapoel Beer Sheva 4-0, and Sturm Graz beat Marseille 1-0.
Why it matters
The league phase table is taking shape after three rounds. Leverkusen and Ferencvaros sit on nine points, and the race for the top eight places, which bring a direct place in the round of 16, is already tight. Bournemouth's win over Milan is the kind of result that changes how the rest of Europe reads this team: a 3-0 win over a Serie A side, even one reduced to 10 men for more than an hour, puts the Cherries firmly in the qualification picture. Milan, by contrast, leave the south coast with a defeat and a goalkeeper facing suspension.
What is next
Matchday 4 follows in the next round of fixtures in November. Leverkusen defend top spot, Juventus look for a first win since the opening rounds, and Milan must respond without Maignan for at least one match.
