Updated 17:25 UTC, Oct 22, 2026: Sri Lanka chase 430 to win by two wickets
Sri Lanka completed the second highest successful chase in ODI history to beat England by two wickets with one ball to spare in Rawalpindi. Chasing 430, Sri Lanka finished on 430 for 8 in 49.5 overs, for a match total of 859 runs.
Pavan Rathnayake made 130 off 106 balls, Avishka Fernando made 97 off 83, and Dasun Shanaka hit 97 off 50 balls with eight sixes. Janith Liyanage finished unbeaten on 61 off 27 balls. Josh Tongue took two wickets in the final over to bring England back into the game, before Liyanage hit a six off the penultimate ball to seal Sri Lanka's first win of the tri-series. Brook, speaking after the match, said his record innings did not mean anything on the losing side, Sky Sports reported.
The original innings report follows.
Harry Brook rewrote the one-day record book in Rawalpindi on Thursday. The England captain scored 202 off 116 balls against Sri Lanka, reaching his double century in 114 balls, the fastest in the 55-year history of one-day internationals. No England batter had scored an ODI double hundred before. Brook is the first.
England finished on 429 for 4 in the third match of the Pakistan ODI tri-series. It is the highest total ever scored in an ODI in Pakistan, and the highest score Sri Lanka have ever conceded in the format. Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to field. Their chase was still under way when this report was published, so this story reports the record innings, not a final result.
A slow start, then a storm
Brook began quietly. He made 13 runs from his first 24 balls and looked short of rhythm. The change came against part-time left-arm spinner Kamindu Mendis, whom he hit for two straight sixes. From there he scored all around the ground, with scoops, reverse scoops and flat, hard drives.
He brought up his fifty in 42 balls and his hundred, his fourth in ODIs, in 75 balls. His previous best ODI score was 136 not out, also against Sri Lanka. By the closing overs he was scoring at will, and England added 156 runs in the last 10 overs of the innings.
Brook reached 200 with a paddle sweep for four in the final over, bowled by Janith Liyanage. He took two more runs, then holed out off the last ball of the innings, caught by Sahan Arachchige. He walked off to a standing ovation from the England dressing room, having hit 21 fours and 10 sixes.
Records fall in a row
The 114-ball double century beat the old mark of 117 balls, set by India's Shubman Gill against the West Indies earlier this year. Brook also passed Ben Stokes, whose 182 against New Zealand at The Oval in 2023 was England's highest ODI score until Thursday. His 31 boundaries are an England ODI record.
The innings was the 14th double hundred in men's ODI cricket. Brook also became only the second man, after Chris Gayle, to hold a Test triple century, an ODI double hundred and a T20 international century at the same time.
Support at the other end
Brook did not build the total alone. He put on 159 with Joe Root, who made 69 from 66 balls before chipping Asitha Fernando to short midwicket. He then added 185 in 79 balls with Will Jacks, who finished unbeaten on 66 from 30 balls after a 25-ball fifty. Opener Tom Banton made 50, his fourth straight half century, and Ben Duckett made 29.
England came into the match after losing their tri-series opener to Pakistan by 87 runs at the same ground. Brook had asked his batters to play with more intent. In Rawalpindi on Thursday, the captain set the example himself, and the record books took the damage.
