Former NFL quarterback Mark Sanchez was set to plead guilty on November 9, 2026, in Marion County, Indianapolis. That hearing will not take place.
Sanchez, 38, is also a former Fox Sports analyst. He faces four charges, including felony battery resulting in serious bodily injury. In September, he agreed to resolve multiple criminal charges with a guilty plea.
The plea hearing had already been rescheduled four times before it was vacated this week.
Hearing vacated and a new judge assigned
On October 21, 2026, court records show his legal team and prosecutors agreed to vacate the November 9 change of plea hearing. Judge Helen Marchal filed an order of recusal.
The case moves to Marion County Superior Court 27. The next hearing is scheduled for January 25, 2027.
Michael Leffler, a spokesperson for the Marion County Prosecutor's Office, confirmed the case remains pending.
Neither recusal order in the case gave a public reason. This is the second recusal in the case. In October 2025, Judge Jennifer Prinz Harrison also recused herself.
The docket entry, cited by NBC Sports, says only that "by agreement of the parties, change of plea hearing was vacated at this time."
NBC Sports reports it is not yet clear whether the plea will be handled on paper or whether the deal has changed. Both points remain open questions, and neither outcome has been confirmed.
Fight in downtown Indianapolis
The charges stem from the early hours of October 4, 2025. Sanchez was stabbed and hospitalized after a fight with truck driver Perry Tole in downtown Indianapolis.
Tole told police he acted in self-defense.
Sanchez's lawyers did not respond to a request for comment, according to reporting by the Indianapolis Star.
Civil case moves toward settlement
A separate civil case is also in progress. On October 6, 2026, the sides appeared ready to settle Tole's federal lawsuit. The terms were not disclosed.
Tole's suit says he suffered severe permanent disfigurement.
Online records did not show a dismissal motion filed as of early October 22. That means the civil case had not been formally closed in the records checked at that time, even as a settlement appeared close.
For the criminal case, the next step is now the hearing on January 25, 2027, in Superior Court 27, with a new judge to oversee the plea and any further proceedings.
