Borussia Dortmund beat Werder Bremen 3-2 at Signal Iduna Park on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, in the second round of the DFB-Pokal. Marcel Sabitzer, who had come on as a substitute in the 71st minute, scored the winning goal in the third minute of stoppage time with a direct free kick from about 26 yards into the top left corner. The win put Dortmund into the last 16 of the competition.

Two goals inside 17 minutes

Dortmund, coached by Niko Kovac, started the match at full pace in front of a sellout crowd of 81,365. Serhou Guirassy opened the scoring in the sixth minute, finishing a pass from Julian Ryerson. Carney Chukwuemeka doubled the lead in the 17th minute, scoring from a Jobe Bellingham assist. Werder created little in the first half, and Dortmund reached the break 2-0 ahead and in control of the tie.

Fullkrug brings Werder level

The match changed in the 58th minute, when Werder sent on Niclas Fullkrug. Fullkrug is a former Dortmund striker, and he hurt his old club quickly. He scored from the penalty spot in the 65th minute, and three minutes later he scored again to make it 2-2. The two goals came in about three minutes and turned a comfortable home win into a level cup tie with time running out. AllFootball reports that Fullkrug has now scored 11 goals in all competitions this season, and that he has scored in seven successive matches.

Sabitzer settles it at the death

Sabitzer had entered the match in the 71st minute, shortly after Werder completed their comeback. Extra time looked certain as the clock ran into stoppage time, with Dortmund pushing forward and Werder defending their penalty area. Dortmund then won a free kick about 26 yards from goal, and Sabitzer curled it into the top left corner in the third minute of added time. The goal ended Werder's resistance, and Dortmund held on through the final seconds to win 3-2.

For Werder, the defeat ends their cup run despite the two goals from Fullkrug and a comeback that had the home crowd worried. For Dortmund, the win sends them into the last 16 on a night that nearly slipped away from them after a strong start.
