Tampa Bay strikes first in an elimination game
Tampa Bay played with its season on the line. The Rays had lost the first three games of the series, including a 10-1 defeat in Game 3 on Monday, and one more loss would have ended their season. Jonny DeLuca reached base in the second inning, and Chandler Simpson doubled him home off starter Dustin May to put Tampa Bay ahead 1-0. Milwaukee tied the game in the top of the fourth. Sal Frelick singled, and Cooper Pratt doubled him home. Tampa Bay answered in the bottom of the fourth, when Junior Caminero scored to restore the lead at 2-1. David Hamilton tied the game again in the fifth, hitting a solo home run off starter Griffin Jax.
Bullpens hold the tie for six innings
Both starters were gone early, and the bullpens took over. May worked three innings for Milwaukee. Jax left in the fifth after Hamilton tied the game. Nick Martinez gave Tampa Bay two clean innings in the sixth and seventh, and Bryan Baker added two scoreless innings. Milwaukee reliever Abner Uribe worked two solid innings. Neither team scored from the sixth inning through the 11th, and the game stayed tied 2-2 into the 12th inning.
Pratt puts Milwaukee three outs from the title
Pratt broke the tie in the top of the 12th. He hit a solo home run off Ian Seymour to give Milwaukee a 3-2 lead. It was the fourth hit of the game for Pratt, who had driven in a run with a double in the fourth. Milwaukee was three outs from a four-game sweep and the first championship in franchise history.
Five straight Rays reach in the bottom of the 12th
Tampa Bay answered against Antonio Senzatela and Shane Drohan, and the rally did not record an out. Caminero reached on a throwing error by shortstop Joey Ortiz. Liam Hicks singled, and DeLuca singled home a run to tie the game at 3-3. Simpson followed with a single that loaded the bases. Williamson then singled home Fortes, and the Rays had their first win of the series. Tampa Bay finished with nine hits to eight for Milwaukee, and Milwaukee committed two errors to one for Tampa Bay.
Game 5 is Wednesday in St. Petersburg
Milwaukee remains one win from the first World Series title in franchise history. The Brewers' only other trip to the World Series ended in a Game 7 loss to St. Louis in 1982. Tampa Bay has never won the World Series. The Rays lost to Philadelphia in five games in 2008 and to the Los Angeles Dodgers in six games in 2020. Game 5 is scheduled for Wednesday night at Tropicana Field.
