The Boston Celtics beat the Chicago Bulls 134-99 at TD Garden on Monday night. Payton Pritchard came off the bench to score a game-high 28 points, and Boston improved to 2-1 while Chicago fell to 1-3.
Pritchard made 7 of his 10 shots from behind the 3-point arc. Jayson Tatum added 23 points, seven rebounds and six assists for the Celtics, who made 21 of their 44 attempts from 3-point range and finished with a 54-40 edge in rebounds.
A third quarter that ended the contest
Boston led 33-21 after the first quarter and 66-54 at halftime. Chicago moved within seven points early in the second half, and the game still had some shape to it at that point. It did not keep that shape for long.
An 11-1 Boston run pushed the margin to 95-71. Pritchard then hit three straight 3-pointers, and the lead reached 104-73 with 43.6 seconds left in the third quarter. Boston led 105-75 after three quarters and by as many as 40 points in the fourth.
Pritchard scored 19 of his 28 points in the third quarter alone. Most of that burst came while Tatum sat on the bench with foul trouble, which made the timing of it matter as much as the scoring itself. Boston won the third quarter 39-21, after the teams had split the second quarter 33-33. The fourth quarter finished 29-24 to Boston.
Chicago had no answer after halftime
Norman Powell led the Bulls with 20 points. Caleb Wilson scored 17, and Josh Giddey and Matas Buzelis each finished with 11. Leonard Miller added nine points and nine rebounds.
Chicago shot 33 of 84 from the field, 39.2 percent, against a Boston defense that controlled the boards and closed out on shooters through the second half. The Bulls trailed by 12 at halftime and by 30 after three quarters, and the final period was played out with the result settled.
Two debuts for Boston
Veteran guard Mike Conley made his debut for the Celtics and scored six points on two 3-pointers in seven minutes. Rookie Chris Cenac Jr. also played his first game for Boston, finishing with three points and one rebound in four minutes.
Boston plays again on Tuesday night, at home against the Brooklyn Nets in the second game of a back-to-back. Chicago travels back to Boston on Friday night, when the two teams meet again at TD Garden.
