Flagg shot 12 of 23 from the field and 2 of 8 from 3-point range. Across the floor, Giannis Antetokounmpo posted his first triple-double for the Heat, with 29 points, 15 rebounds and 11 assists, and it still was not enough to give Miami its first win of the season.
A lead that changed hands all night
Miami stretched its lead to 12 points in the second quarter. Dallas closed the half with a 17-4 run and went into the break ahead 53-52. Miami led again after three quarters, 84-83, in a game where neither side held control for long.
The quarter scores show how tight it stayed: Miami took the first 27-23, Dallas the second 30-25, Miami the third 32-30 and Dallas the fourth 30-25.
The final minute
Flagg scored 12 of his points in the fourth quarter. With 31.1 seconds left, Andrew Wiggins tried a 3-pointer that would have put the Heat in front, but the shot did not go in. After a timeout, Flagg drove for a layup with 10 seconds left that made the margin four points, and Miami could not answer.
Miami also hurt itself at the line. The Heat missed 11 of their 25 free throws in a four-point loss.
Around the box score
P.J. Washington added 20 points and nine rebounds for Dallas. Kyrie Irving scored 18 points with six rebounds and six assists, and Walter Clayton Jr. scored 15 off the bench.
Davion Mitchell led Miami's supporting scoring with 21 points. Bam Adebayo was held to eight points and eight rebounds, shooting 3 of 10 from the floor and 0 of 5 from 3-point range.
Dallas also lost a player during the game. Rookie Sergio de Larrea, who was coming off a 21-point game, was held scoreless in six minutes off the bench. He left in the second quarter with a right knee strain and did not return.
What the result means
Miami is 0-4 for the fifth time in team history and the first time since the 2008-09 season. The game was also the first meeting between first-year Dallas coach Dusty May and Miami coach Erik Spoelstra. Spoelstra said of May: "He's a heck of a coach. There's no doubt about it."
The Mavericks host Oklahoma City on Wednesday night. The Heat visit Atlanta the same night, still looking for their first win.
