Ryland scores every Arizona point
The Rams scored first. Jacoby Brissett threw an early interception to safety Quentin Lake, who undercut a pass for tight end Trey McBride, Cardinals Wire reported. Josh Sweat then sacked Matthew Stafford on third down, and Blake Grupe kicked a 44-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead on his Rams debut, Rams Wire reported.
Grupe was hurt making a tackle on the kickoff that followed and was doubtful to return with a knee injury. Punter Ethan Evans took over the Rams kicking duties for the rest of the game.
Ryland tied the game with a 34-yard field goal late in the first quarter, then put Arizona ahead 6-3 with a 30-yarder early in the second. Arizona's defense held Los Angeles to 23 yards of offense in the first quarter, the Arizona Republic reported.
Stafford puts the Rams in front, twice
Stafford threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to running back Blake Corum in the second quarter. With Grupe out, the Rams went for two points. Stafford took a heavy hit and fumbled, and defensive end L.J. Collier recovered the ball, so the lead stayed at 9-6.
Ryland made a 22-yard field goal to tie the game 9-9 just before halftime. He added a 38-yarder in the third quarter for a 12-9 lead, then a 27-yarder with 9 minutes 11 seconds left in the fourth for 15-9. On that drive Arizona reached the Rams 4 yard line and came away with three points instead of seven.
Los Angeles then fumbled on two straight plays in the fourth quarter. Stafford recovered his own fumble on the first. On the next, he completed a pass to Tyler Higbee, who fumbled, and Denzel Burke recovered for Arizona, the Arizona Republic reported.
Stafford finished 25 of 33 for 222 yards and two touchdowns, according to Sportradar figures. Puka Nacua caught six passes for 80 yards. Bam Knight ran 15 times for 80 yards for Arizona and kept moving the Cardinals into field goal range.
Forty seven seconds is too much time
Stafford drove the Rams in front late. He threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Colby Parkinson, and Evans made the extra point for a 16-15 lead with 47 seconds remaining, theScore reported.
That left Brissett enough time. He moved Arizona down the field quickly, and Ryland kicked the winning 43-yard field goal as time expired. Ryland finished six for six. Parkinson caught five passes for 31 yards and the late score, and Corum ran nine times for 42 yards and caught the other Los Angeles touchdown, according to Sportradar.
