No. 8 BYU beat No. 2 Notre Dame 28 to 24 at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo on Saturday, October 17, 2026. Bear Bachmeier threw a 6 yard touchdown pass to Walker Lyons with 1 minute and 47 seconds left, and Notre Dame drove to the BYU 8 yard line in the final seconds but did not score. BYU stays unbeaten at 6 and 0, and Notre Dame takes its first loss of the season.
Bachmeier had a hand in all four BYU touchdowns. He ran for two, caught one on a trick play, and threw the winner. ESPN College GameDay was in Provo for the first time in 17 years, and the home crowd got the finish it came for.
BYU controls the first half
BYU scored on the opening drive. Bachmeier ran it in from 5 yards to finish an 11 play, 75 yard drive, and Notre Dame lost star defensive end Boubacar Traore on the same series. Traore was ejected for targeting on a hit on Bachmeier. Spencer Porath kicked a 46 yard field goal to get Notre Dame on the board at 7 to 3.
Notre Dame took a short lead in the second quarter. Nolan James Jr. ran 8 yards for a touchdown and the Irish led 10 to 7. BYU answered with the trick play of the night. Bachmeier handed the ball off, Kyler Kasper threw it back to him, and Bachmeier scored on a 15 yard catch for a 14 to 10 lead. Late in the half, Bachmeier ran in from 1 yard out and BYU led 21 to 10.
Notre Dame nearly cut into that lead before halftime. The Irish drove to the BYU 6 yard line, and CJ Carr tried to spike the ball to stop the clock. The ball slipped, officials ruled it a fumble after review, BYU recovered, and the half ended with the Cougars up 11.
Notre Dame claws back, then BYU answers
The second half belonged to Notre Dame for a long stretch. A muffed BYU punt, recovered by Bubba Frazier, set up a 31 yard Porath field goal. A failed BYU fake punt gave Notre Dame the ball at the BYU 25, and Porath hit again from 39 yards to make it 21 to 16. In the fourth quarter, Jonaz Walton ran 3 yards for a touchdown and ran in the two point conversion too, and Notre Dame led 24 to 21 with 9 minutes and 31 seconds left. The Irish had scored 14 straight points.
Jayden Sanders then intercepted Bachmeier at the Notre Dame 15, and the Irish had the chance to put the game away. They punted instead. BYU went 55 yards in 10 plays, Bachmeier hit Legend Glasker for 26 yards, and after a false start pushed the Cougars back 5 yards, Bachmeier found Lyons in the end zone on third and goal with 1:47 left. Notre Dame used its timeouts, converted a fourth down, and reached first and goal at the BYU 8 with 4 seconds left. The last play did not score, and Provo poured onto the field.
What it means
A win would have put Notre Dame at No. 1 after Auburn upset Georgia earlier in the day. Instead the Irish are 6 and 1, and BYU is 6 and 0 with the best win of its season, over the No. 2 team in the country. This was the 10th meeting between the schools, and Notre Dame still leads the series 7 to 3.
