Bournemouth beat Sunderland 2-0 at the Vitality Stadium on Sunday, October 18, 2026, to record their first Premier League win of the season, on a day the ground also set a club record league crowd of 12,004.

Early goal, early red card

Marcus Tavernier headed the home side in front in the sixth minute, nodding in after Evanilson had set him up with an early run and cross, in the Press Association account of the match. Sunderland's task got much harder in the 17th minute, when centre back Kevin Danso was shown a straight red card for dragging Evanilson down as the forward ran through on goal.

Bournemouth controlled the rest of the match against 10 men. Sportradar's match statistics gave the home side 29 shots to Sunderland's 7, with 8 on target to none for the visitors, and 63 percent of the possession. Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs made six saves. At the other end, Bournemouth keeper Djordje Petrovic kept a clean sheet without having a single save to make. Winger Rayan was the home side's other constant threat. Sportradar's player statistics credited him with seven shots, three of them on target, the most by any player in the match. Bournemouth used all five substitutes as they protected the lead in the closing stages.

Evanilson seals it with a landmark goal

Evanilson doubled the lead in the 48th minute, three minutes after halftime, pouncing on a defensive error to score. The Press Association reported that the goal was the 100th of his career. He finished the match with a goal and an assist before coming off for Alvaro Rodriguez in the 79th minute.

Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris sent on Luke O'Nien, Habib Diarra and Jules Ahoka as his side looked for a way back, but the visitors never tested Petrovic. Justin Kluivert, on for Lewis Cook, had three late shots off target as Bournemouth saw the match out in comfort.

A record crowd and a lift out of the bottom three

Sky Sports described the result as Bournemouth's first Premier League win under manager Marco Rose, one that moved the club out of the bottom three. Khel Now reported that Sunderland stay 19th after the defeat. The crowd of 12,004 was a club record for a league match at the ground, made possible by the new northwest and southeast corners. The corners opened for the first time on Thursday night, when Bournemouth beat Austrian side Sturm Graz 3-0 in the Europa League in the first European home match at the ground.
