Key points

  • Jena Bishop is the first PFL women's flyweight champion.
  • Carmouche almost ended it early.
  • Bishop settled in the second round.

Jena Bishop is the first PFL women's flyweight champion. The 40 year old beat Liz Carmouche by unanimous decision at Wintrust Arena in Chicago on Friday night, taking all three scorecards 48-47 in a five round main event that she nearly lost in the first five minutes.

Carmouche almost ended it early. She hurt Bishop with a run of punches in the first round and followed her to the ground with hammer fists. Bishop covered up and held on until the horn. It was the kind of start that usually decides a fight.

Bishop settled in the second round. Her jiu-jitsu slowed Carmouche down and turned the fight into a grappling contest. In the third round Bishop dragged Carmouche to the canvas, took her back and worked on a rear naked choke for close to a minute. Carmouche refused to tap and survived the position.

Carmouche had the better of the fourth round on the feet and looked the fresher fighter going into the fifth. The fight was close enough that the last round likely decided it. Bishop took Carmouche down again, climbed onto her back and spent the closing minutes hunting the choke. Carmouche defended every attempt, but she finished the fight in the worst position, and the judges gave Bishop the round and the title.

Revenge, then a bigger test

The result settles a score. Carmouche finished Bishop by knockout in the first round when they met in Charlotte in August 2025. This time Bishop, now 12-3, went the full five rounds with a former Bellator champion and UFC title challenger and came out ahead. Carmouche falls to 26-9.

The next test is already set up. Dakota Ditcheva, unbeaten at 16-0, told the broadcast she has been cleared for full contact training after breaking both of her hands in her last fight in July. She faced off with Bishop in the cage after the decision and is expected to challenge for the title in early 2027. Ditcheva beat Bishop by first round knockout in August 2024, so Bishop knows exactly what is coming.

On the rest of the main card, Timur Khizriev stayed unbeaten at 19-0 with a split decision over Gabriel Braga, the cards reading 29-28, 28-29 and 29-28. Sarvarjon Khamidov knocked out Rafael do Nascimento with punches at 1:49 of the first round.
