A 15 year old girl escaped from a Baltimore, Maryland home after she was attacked in a basement, fought back with a fire extinguisher and ran for help, according to Baltimore police and charging documents reported by local stations. The suspect, Abubakarr Barrie, 23, of Baltimore, was arrested on Saturday and was ordered held without bond on Monday.
Police said the girl accepted a ride on Thursday, October 22 from a driver she believed was offering an unlicensed cab ride, a service known locally as a hack. Charging documents say she asked to be taken from her sister's house to a takeout restaurant in northeast Baltimore. When the driver began going in the wrong direction and she told him so, the documents say he became violent and placed her in a headlock.
The escape on Belle Avenue
The documents say Barrie took the girl to his home on Garrison Boulevard in northwest Baltimore and forced her into a small room in the basement, where he told her to put her phone down and not to scream. Police and the documents say he stabbed her multiple times. She fought back with a fire extinguisher, fled the house and knocked on doors in a nearby neighborhood until a resident let her call her mother and 911.
Officers who responded to a stabbing call near the 3800 block of Belle Avenue on Thursday evening found emergency responders treating the girl. "The victim did in fact advise she escaped from a basement in the area and that she was stabbed by an unknown male," the police statement provided to CBS News said. She was taken to Sinai Hospital, where she was treated for multiple stab wounds and a collapsed lung. Reports said she was expected to survive.
The girl is not named in any report.
How investigators identified the suspect
Investigators said the girl gave them information tied to a Cash App account connected to the man who offered her the ride. Police used that information to identify a phone number and a vehicle registered to Barrie that matched the car she described. Her missing iPhone 14 provided the other lead, as investigators traced it to the Garrison Boulevard address.
Barrie was arrested on October 24 within about half a mile of where officers found the girl. Court records show he is charged with attempted first degree murder, attempted second degree murder, first degree assault, second degree assault, reckless endangerment, carrying a dangerous weapon with intent to injure, kidnapping, false imprisonment and theft of $100 to under $1,500.
A judge ordered Barrie held without bond after a hearing on Monday, October 26. He is represented by the public defender's office, and court records did not name a specific lawyer. He is scheduled to return to court on November 25, according to reports. The charges are allegations, and Barrie is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
