Whirlpool reported a third quarter loss on Monday, October 26, 2026, and cut its full year outlook to a loss. The appliance maker released its results after the market close at 4:05 p.m. Eastern. On an adjusted basis it lost 21 cents per share in the quarter, compared with a profit of 2.09 dollars per share a year earlier. On a GAAP basis it lost 3.80 dollars per share, and the net loss for the quarter was 249 million dollars, down from a profit of 73 million dollars a year earlier.

Sales miss estimates

Third quarter net sales were 3.677 billion dollars, down 8.8 percent from a year earlier, or down 5.4 percent after removing currency effects and its former India business. Analysts had expected an adjusted profit of about 1 dollar per share and revenue of about 3.9 billion dollars, so both the earnings and the sales figures missed estimates. The adjusted profit margin before interest and taxes slipped to 2.6 percent from 4.5 percent a year earlier, and free cash flow for the quarter was negative 1.08 billion dollars.

Outlook cut for the third time

Whirlpool cut its full year 2026 outlook for the third time this year. It now expects net sales of approximately 14.5 billion dollars, a GAAP loss of 4.95 dollars per share and an adjusted loss of about 1.30 dollars per share. That reverses the profit outlook of 2.50 to 3.00 dollars per share issued with its second quarter results in August. Chief executive Marc Bitzer said: "While the pace of recovery is slower than expected, these actions are setting a clear path for further improvements in 2027."

North America weak, Latin America charge

North America, Whirlpool's largest market, saw major appliance sales fall 8.3 percent to 2.495 billion dollars. The segment profit margin was 3.0 percent, and segment operating profit fell 44.7 percent to 74 million dollars. Latin America sales rose 6.9 percent to 858 million dollars, but Whirlpool recorded a 54 million dollar charge tied to the bankruptcy reorganization of a major Latin American retail customer, including 46 million dollars in expected credit losses. Investing.com identified the retailer as Grupo Casas Bahia.

Shares fall to a 2009 low

Whirlpool shares fell about 9 percent in after hours trading on Monday after closing down 5.9 percent at 26.44 dollars, the lowest close since March 20, 2009. The stock is down 63.3 percent this year, on pace for its worst year on record. Reuters reported the shares down 8.8 percent in premarket trading on Tuesday, October 27. Wells Fargo kept an Equal Weight rating and a 30 dollar price target on Whirlpool after the results, saying margin shortfalls in North America and Latin America and weaker small appliance growth left few bright spots.
