Vijaya Dashami, the main day of Dashain, falls on Wednesday, October 21 in Nepal, and the auspicious time to receive tika is 10:26 a.m., according to the Nepal Panchanga Nirnayak Bikas Samiti, the national calendar committee. The goddess statue is immersed at 8:49 a.m. that morning, those receiving tika should face west, and the committee's chair, Dr Purushottam Bhattarai, has said tika can be received through the whole day. The 10:26 time is the best moment, not a deadline.

Why the date changes abroad

For Nepali families in North America and Europe, Vijaya Dashami falls a day earlier, on Tuesday, October 20. The Dashami tithi ends earlier relative to sunrise in western time zones, so the International Panchanga Decision Committee in Kathmandu sets separate auspicious times city by city. Families abroad should use their own city's time, not the Kathmandu time converted.

The road to tika day

Dashain opened with Ghatasthapana on October 11, when jamara was sown. Phulpati fell on October 17, Maha Ashtami on October 18, and Maha Navami follows on Tuesday, October 20 in Nepal. On Vijaya Dashami elders place tika, a mix of rice, curd and vermilion, on the foreheads of younger family members along with jamara, and give dakshina. The festival closes with Kojagrat Purnima on Sunday, October 25.

For the diaspora, the city list above is the practical heart of the festival this year: one morning, at different hours on two different dates, the same blessing moves around the world.
