Key points

  • Indian stocks opened the week with almost no direction on Monday, October 19, 2026.
  • The Nifty PSU Bank index rose more than 2 percent in early trade in one report and more than 1 percent in another, while the Nifty Oil and Gas index gained 0.78 percent.
  • Brent crude traded nearly 2 percent lower at about 107.76 dollars a barrel, and US West Texas Intermediate fell about 1 percent to 100.43 dollars, IANS reported.

Indian stocks opened the week with almost no direction on Monday, October 19, 2026. The Sensex opened at 74,849.30, up 120.03 points or 0.16 percent, and the Nifty opened at 23,150.85, up 4.70 points or 0.02 percent, IANS reported. Bank stocks carried the open. IT stocks dragged it back.

The Nifty PSU Bank index rose more than 2 percent in early trade in one report and more than 1 percent in another, while the Nifty Oil and Gas index gained 0.78 percent. On the other side, the Nifty IT index fell 1.26 percent, the Nifty Private Bank index fell more than 1 percent, and the Nifty FMCG index fell 0.28 percent, ANI reported. In plain terms, cheap bank shares and energy names did the lifting, and the tech names that led last week gave some of it back.

Oil gives back a little, gold does not

Brent crude traded nearly 2 percent lower at about 107.76 dollars a barrel, and US West Texas Intermediate fell about 1 percent to 100.43 dollars, IANS reported. A separate market report put Brent down 1.7 percent at 108.02 dollars in early Asian trade, Reuters reported. The fall followed the US decision to waive sanctions and tariffs on Russia, a move that could let more Russian fuel reach buyers.

Oil is lower, not cheap. Brent settled on Friday, October 16, 2026, at its highest level since May, after a week of attacks around the Strait of Hormuz and strikes on Russian energy sites. A two dollar fall takes the edge off inflation fears for a day. It does not end them.

Gold moved the other way. In India, 24 karat gold rose 0.29 percent to 148,350 rupees per 10 grams, and silver rose 0.62 percent to 212,486 rupees per kilogram, ANI reported. In global trade, gold was near 4,180 dollars an ounce, up about 0.4 percent, as traders cut bets on a Federal Reserve rate hike this month. Gold does not pay interest, so it tends to rise when traders think rates will stay put and fall when they expect a hike.

Asia trims the early damage

The regional picture steadied as the morning went on. Japan's Nikkei 225 traded 0.84 percent lower at about 64,760, a smaller loss than the fall of more than 2 percent at the open. South Korea's Kospi rose 0.66 percent to 5,705 after opening sharply lower, and Singapore's Straits Times rose 0.25 percent to 5,428, ANI reported. Indonesia was the exception: the Jakarta Composite fell more than 5 percent to 4,917, as the MSCI downgrade consultation kept pressure on Jakarta stocks.

China helped calm the open. Third quarter growth came in at 4.5 percent year on year, ahead of the 4.4 percent forecast, with retail sales up 1.1 percent and industrial production up 5.5 percent in September. Those numbers do not fix China's weak property market, but they gave Asian desks one less reason to sell first and ask later.

Wall Street set the nervous tone on Friday, October 16, 2026. The S and P 500 fell 1.09 percent to 7,659.44, the Nasdaq fell 2.15 percent to 26,140, and the Dow fell 0.34 percent to 52,002.41. In India, the Sensex had closed that Friday up 413.66 points at 74,729.27, and the Nifty closed at 23,146.15, which is why Monday's flat open counts as holding ground rather than giving it up.

Why it matters and what is next

For Indian households, the two prices that matter most from this open are fuel and gold, and they moved in opposite directions. Cheaper crude, if it lasts, eases petrol, diesel and cooking gas pressure. Costlier gold raises the bill for the wedding and festival season that is now under way.

The week now turns to earnings and data. Bajaj Finance, UltraTech Cement, Hindustan Zinc and Union Bank of India are among the Indian companies reporting on Monday. Canada reports September inflation on Monday, Netflix reports on Tuesday, and Tesla and Meta report on Wednesday. The Federal Reserve is in its blackout period before its October 27 to 28 meeting, so traders will trade the data, not the speeches.
