The Seattle Seahawks agreed on Tuesday to acquire guard Quenton Nelson from the Indianapolis Colts for a third round pick in the 2027 NFL Draft and a fifth round pick in the 2028 draft, according to multiple reports. The deal was first reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, and it is the first blockbuster trade of the season ahead of the Nov. 10 trade deadline.
Nelson, 30, has played his whole career in Indianapolis since the Colts drafted him sixth overall out of Notre Dame in 2018. He has been selected to the Pro Bowl in all eight of his previous seasons, with three first team All-Pro selections and three second team All-Pro selections. He has started all 136 games he has played. Through seven games this season he has allowed zero sacks and six pressures, according to Pro Football Focus figures cited by theScore.
Why Seattle made the move
Seattle's offensive line has been the weak point of a 4-3 team that beat the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday night, Oct. 25, handing Kansas City its first loss of the season. The Seahawks had allowed the third most pressures in the league, 95, heading into Week 8, according to TruMedia figures cited by theScore, and quarterback Sam Darnold was sacked five times in the two games before the Kansas City win, according to USA Today. The running game ranks 29th in expected points added per rush, according to Next Gen Stats.
Nelson has played only left guard in the NFL, and reports say Seattle plans to start him there. That moves Grey Zabel, the Seahawks' first round pick in 2025, to the right side of the line, where he played in college at North Dakota State. The trade is the fourth straight year that general manager John Schneider has acquired a notable veteran ahead of the deadline, after defensive lineman Leonard Williams, linebacker Ernest Jones IV and wide receiver Rashid Shaheed in previous seasons, according to USA Today.
The contract and the Colts side
Nelson is in the final year of a four year, $80 million contract extension, with a $16 million base salary this season, and he can become a free agent in March. Seattle takes on the rest of that contract. Asked about his future last week, on Oct. 21, Nelson said: "I love it here. I met my wife here. I really appreciate and love this organization. It's been a long career here, made a lot of friendships and bonds here that I don't take for granted."
Indianapolis fired general manager Chris Ballard on Oct. 19, and interim general manager Ed Dodds, who worked for the Seahawks as a scout and personnel executive from 2007 to 2016, is now running the roster. The Colts fell to 2-5 with Sunday's loss to the Minnesota Vikings and do not hold a first round pick in 2027 after last season's trade for cornerback Sauce Gardner. Reports say rookie Jalen Farmer is the likely replacement at left guard, and that Indianapolis is also shopping defensive tackle DeForest Buckner before the Nov. 10 deadline.
