Sanjay Gupta, the Hindi film director whose crime dramas Kaante, Zinda and Kaabil shaped a distinct style of Mumbai cinema, died on Thursday, October 30, after a fall at his home. Film Information, the trade publication that first reported his death on Saturday morning, said Gupta fell in his bathroom on Thursday night and that nobody realised what had happened until early on Saturday, October 31, when it emerged that he had died after the fall. IANS, citing its sources, reported the same account and said he injured his head. Filmfare reported that the exact circumstances of his death had yet to be officially confirmed, and Bollywood Hungama and Variety India reported that no official cause of death had been disclosed.

Filmmaker Ashoke Pandit confirmed the death in a post on Instagram quoted by IANS and The Hollywood Reporter India. Pandit wrote: "It's really shocking and sad. Just got the news that our dear friend an ace director @_sanjaygupta is no more. He passed due to a head injury at home." He called Gupta "a wonderful narrator, full of life persona & a passionate filmmaker" and said details of the last rites would be shared soon. Actor Tusshar Kapoor, who starred in Shootout at Lokhandwala, wrote that he woke up to the sad news of the sudden demise of his beloved director and called him a man who believed in living life to the fullest.

A career built on crime stories

Gupta began directing with Aatish: Feel the Fire in 1994, starring Aditya Pancholi and Sanjay Dutt. Ram Shastra, Hameshaa, Jung and Khauff followed. Before directing, Filmfare reported, he worked in post-production and sound design and assisted filmmaker Pankaj Parashar on the television series Karamchand and the film Jalwa.

His breakthrough came with Kaante in 2002, a heist film with an ensemble cast led by Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Suniel Shetty, Mahesh Manjrekar, Lucky Ali and Kumar Gaurav. Parts of Kaante were filmed in Los Angeles, and IANS reported that the September 11, 2001 attacks forced the production to move planned scenes away from areas then considered sensitive. The film's colour grading, camera movement and ensemble casting, noted by The Hollywood Reporter India, became the marks that readers and critics tied to his name. His partnership with Sanjay Dutt ran through much of his career, from Aatish through Kaante, Musafir and Zinda.

The Shootout films and Kaabil

Through his production banner, White Feather Films, Gupta produced Shootout at Lokhandwala in 2007, directed by Apoorva Lakhia, and the anthology Dus Kahaniyaan the same year. He directed Musafir in 2004 and Zinda in 2006, and later directed and co-produced Shootout at Wadala in 2013. Jazbaa, starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, followed in 2015. Kaabil, his 2017 revenge drama starring Hrithik Roshan and Yami Gautam, became one of his biggest commercial successes, and he returned to the Mumbai underworld with Mumbai Saga in 2021. His last film as director was The Miranda Brothers, released in 2025 and starring Harshvardhan Rane and Meezaan Jafri, the story of two orphaned brothers who rise as footballers.

Reports of his age differed. IANS and The Hollywood Reporter India gave his age as 59, while Filmfare and Variety India gave 57. IANS reported that he is survived by his wife, Anu Lekhi.
