Nashville, Tennessee: Teen, 16, Arrested at His High School in Killing of DoorDash Driver in Madison

Metro Nashville police arrested a 16-year-old at his high school on Friday in connection with the October 15 shooting that killed a DoorDash driver and critically wounded his 14-year-old brother in the Madison neighborhood, according to two Nashville television reports. The reports said the teen faces charges including criminal homicide and conspiracy. Police have not named the teenager, and no motive has been announced.

The October 15 shooting

Two brothers were sitting in a black Infiniti in the parking lot of the Birchstone Village Apartments on North Dupont Avenue in Madison at about 7:45 p.m. on Thursday, October 15, when a man approached and opened fire, the Metro Nashville Police Department said in a statement. Moments later, two more men arrived at the car and one of them also fired shots. The driver tried to get away and the car backed into a fence. All three men ran off on foot before officers arrived.

The driver died of his injuries. His 14-year-old brother was taken to Vanderbilt Pediatric Hospital in critical condition. The family later said the younger brother had been shot in the head.

A delivery driver and his little brother

Police identified the driver as John J. Diaz, 21. His father, Juan Díaz, told WSMV the brothers were Jhon Diaz Santos, 22, and Alan, 14, and said Jhon had been delivering for DoorDash for about a year. The father said Alan rode along that night after the family had dinner together. Relatives set up a fundraiser for the family in the days after the shooting, and the brothers' mother asked publicly for justice in local interviews.

In the days after the attack, Metro Nashville homicide detectives said they were working strong leads in the case. Police described a coordinated attack: one gunman fired first, and a second fired moments later as the brothers tried to escape.

What is known about the arrest

The two television reports said officers took the 16-year-old into custody at his high school on Friday, October 30. The reports did not name the school and did not say whether police are still looking for the other two men seen in the October 15 attack. Anyone with information about the shooting can call Nashville Crime Stoppers at 615-742-7463, police said in their earlier appeal.
