Sir Patrick Stewart, the actor who commanded the starship Enterprise as Captain Jean-Luc Picard and led the X-Men as Professor Charles Xavier, died on Wednesday, October 28, at his home in Los Angeles. He was 86. His family announced his death on Thursday, October 29, in a statement posted to his official Instagram account. The Hollywood Reporter first reported the death through a representative for the actor, according to ScreenRant, and ComicBook.com, TheWrap, Slashfilm and other outlets published the family's statement the same afternoon.
The family said Stewart died "following a brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer's Disease and Lewy Body Dementia" and "in the loving care of his beloved wife Sunny." The statement continued: "He has been held in the warm embrace of family and friends, surrounded by live music, prayer, tears, laughter, and the kind of profound emotion that only he could inspire after a lifetime of devotion to us all. We will forever cherish the peaceful ease and reflection on his face, an enduring reminder of his invincible grace."
A classical actor from Yorkshire
Stewart was born on July 13, 1940, in Mirfield, in the West Riding of Yorkshire. He trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1966, remaining a member until 1982 and building a reputation as one of Britain's finest classical actors. British television viewers saw him as the Roman general Sejanus in the 1976 series I, Claudius. His first film role came in 1975, when he appeared in Hedda. He later played King Leondegrance in the 1981 film Excalibur and Gurney Halleck in the 1984 adaptation of Dune.
The captain of the Enterprise
In 1987 Stewart took command of the Enterprise-D in Star Trek: The Next Generation. He played Picard for seven seasons of the series and returned to the role in four feature films, Generations, First Contact, Insurrection and Nemesis. Picard was a captain defined by diplomacy and conviction. Two decades later he returned to the role as the star and executive producer of Star Trek: Picard, which began in 2020 and ran for three seasons on Paramount+.
Professor Xavier
For a second generation of filmgoers, Stewart was Professor Charles Xavier, the telepathic founder of the X-Men. He first played Xavier in X-Men in 2000, opposite his close friend Ian McKellen as Magneto, and returned in X2, X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men: Days of Future Past. His ailing Xavier in Logan in 2017 drew wide praise, and he played the character once more in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in 2022.
Stage, voice and honours
Stewart never left the stage. He toured his one-man production of A Christmas Carol, played Macbeth in the West End and on Broadway, and reunited with McKellen for Waiting for Godot and No Man's Land. Animation audiences knew his voice as CIA Deputy Director Avery Bullock on American Dad! He was knighted in 2010 for services to drama, and he published his memoir, Making It So, in 2023.
Stewart married the singer Sunny Ozell in 2013, in a ceremony officiated by McKellen. He is survived by his wife and his two children. In lieu of flowers, his family asked that memorial contributions be made to the Johns Hopkins Alzheimer's Disease Research Center Fund.
