A young man was critically injured in Salt Lake City on Monday morning when a driver ran a red light on Redwood Road, crashed into another vehicle and spun into an e-bike rider who was crossing in the crosswalk, police said.

The crash happened shortly after 11 a.m. on Monday, October 26, at the intersection of Redwood Road and 1700 South, on the west side of the city.

How the crash happened

"A vehicle traveling southbound on Redwood Road ran the red light and it struck a vehicle that was going eastbound through that intersection," Sgt. Greg Wilking of the Salt Lake City Police Department said. "After impact, the vehicle that ran the red light spun and hit a person that was on an e-bike. That person was transported to a local hospital in critical condition."

Wilking said the rider was in the crosswalk, crossing along with the eastbound vehicle that was struck. Police described the rider as a young male adult. His name and exact age have not been released, and police have not announced any update on his condition.

Intersection closed for several hours

Both drivers remained at the scene after the crash. Police closed the intersection of Redwood Road and 1700 South for several hours while investigators documented the scene, and ABC4 Utah reported that Redwood Road was closed in both directions at 1700 South. Police asked motorists to avoid the intersection while the closure was in place, according to Fox 13 Utah.

Redwood Road is a major north and south street on the west side of Salt Lake City, carrying commuter traffic through some of the city's most densely populated neighborhoods. A closure at 1700 South pushes drivers onto surrounding streets, and the intersection stayed shut through the late morning while the investigation continued.

The crash is the kind of collision west side residents say they fear most at the wide Redwood Road intersections: a driver running a light at speed, a second car hit broadside, and a person on a bike or on foot caught in the path with no protection. On Monday, that person was a young man on an e-bike who had the walk signal's side of the intersection and nowhere to go.

Police have not announced any citations or charges in the crash. The investigation is continuing.
