Landen Williams-Callis ran 28 times for 275 yards and three touchdowns at Guy K. Traylor Stadium in Rosenberg, and his last carry, a 75 yard touchdown run with 50 seconds left, gave Randle a 29 to 22 win over Angleton in District 11-5A Division I. Both teams came in at 8 and 0. Randle, ranked second in the High School On SI Texas Top 25 behind Allen, moves to 9 and 0 overall and 7 and 0 in district play, alone in first place. Angleton, ranked 20th in the same poll, falls to 8 and 1 overall and 6 and 1 in the district.
How the game turned
Williams-Callis opened the scoring on a 62 yard touchdown run with 10:02 left in the first quarter, his 31st rushing touchdown of the season, though the extra point was missed. Angleton reached first and goal at the Randle 6 later in the quarter, but penalties and a sack pushed the Wildcats back, and a strip sack ended the threat when Randle's Camron Hypolite recovered the fumble.
A 28 yard field goal made it 9 to 0 in the second quarter before Angleton answered. Kasen Jammer broke free for a 61 yard touchdown run with 1:41 left in the half, and Randle led 9 to 7 at the break. Williams-Callis scored from 5 yards in the third quarter to stretch the lead to 16 to 7.
The fourth quarter swung twice. Randle kicked a 25 yard field goal on the first play of the quarter and another field goal with 8:30 left, after Angleton fumbled a kickoff return, to lead 22 to 7. Williams-Callis left the game during that stretch to have his right ankle taped. Angleton then scored 15 points in under four minutes. Ma'Chai Williams grabbed a handoff and ran about 20 yards for a touchdown with 4:56 left. After a Randle punt, a long touchdown pass to Jake Brittain and a two point conversion on a keeper tied the game at 22 with 1:05 to play.
Randle needed one play to answer. Williams-Callis took the handoff on the first snap of the next drive and went 75 yards for the go ahead score. The Lions' defense then stopped Angleton on fourth down just past midfield to end it.
A season building toward 10,000 yards
Friday was the eighth time this season Williams-Callis has rushed for 200 or more yards, and the fourth time he has passed 250. The senior, a five star recruit committed to the University of Texas, now has 2,270 rushing yards and 33 touchdowns this season and 9,764 yards and 157 rushing touchdowns in his career. Earlier this season he broke the Houston area career touchdown record of 136, held by his older cousin, the former Oregon State standout Jaquizz Rodgers.
Only four players in Texas high school history have reached 10,000 career rushing yards. Williams-Callis needs 236 more, and he gets his chance in the regular season finale on Friday, November 6, when Randle plays at Friendswood. A win there also gives the Lions the outright district championship. Randle had outscored its first eight opponents 442 to 52 before Friday night.
