A man riding a bicycle through Houston's Third Ward late Friday night was shot five times by two men in hoodies and died at a hospital, Houston police said.
The shooting happened at about 11:40 p.m. on Friday, October 30, in the 2900 block of Callie Street in Third Ward, the historic neighborhood southeast of downtown Houston. Police said the victim, a 40 year old man, was riding his bike when two men wearing hoodies started shooting at him.
He was hit five times: once in the head, twice in the torso, once in the groin and once in the leg. Houston Fire Department crews took him to an area hospital, where he later died. Police have not released his name.
The search for the two shooters
The two men fled after the shooting, and police gave no description of them beyond the hoodies they were wearing. Houston police Lt. Pulido said investigators were speaking with witnesses who saw and heard the shooting, and were looking into possible video footage of it.
That witness work is, for now, the whole of the public case. Police have not said what the witnesses saw beyond the shooting itself, whether any camera on the block recorded the men arriving or leaving, or whether the shooters were on foot or in a vehicle when they fled. The block where the man was shot is a residential stretch of Third Ward, and a late night shooting there, at 11:40 p.m. on a Friday, is the kind of case that often turns on a doorbell camera or a neighbor who heard more than they first realized.
What police have not said
Police said the motive for the shooting is unknown. They have not said whether the man knew the two shooters, whether he was followed, or whether anything was taken from him, and no arrests had been announced by Saturday morning.
Until investigators release a name, a motive, or a fuller description of the two men, the case rests on the witnesses and the video search Lt. Pulido described. Anyone on or near Callie Street late Friday night who saw or heard the shooting is the kind of witness investigators said they were already trying to reach.
