Rams Lose Davante Adams for 6 to 10 Weeks as Injuries Pile Up After Cardinals Loss
Sean McVay said Monday that Adams ruptured a hamstring muscle, Poona Ford and Blake Grupe are out for the season, and Kobie Turner will miss four to six weeks, leaving the 2-4 Rams short at receiver, on the defensive line and at kicker before Sunday's trip to Las Vegas.
Key points
- The Los Angeles Rams lost a close game on Sunday, and on Monday they learned the loss had cost them far more than one result.
- Adams pulled up on a non-contact play and did not finish the game.
- Nose tackle Poona Ford ruptured his triceps on Sunday and will miss the rest of the season, McVay said.
The Los Angeles Rams lost a close game on Sunday, and on Monday they learned the loss had cost them far more than one result. Head coach Sean McVay told reporters that wide receiver Davante Adams ruptured his semitendinosus, one of the hamstring muscles, while running a route late in the fourth quarter of the 18 to 16 home loss to the Arizona Cardinals. Adams will miss six to 10 weeks.
Adams pulled up on a non-contact play and did not finish the game. He has 30 catches for 480 yards and four touchdowns in six games this season. The 33-year-old is a six-time Pro Bowl pick and a three-time first-team All-Pro. Across 13 seasons with Green Bay, Las Vegas, the New York Jets and the Rams, he has 1,047 catches for 13,113 yards and 121 touchdowns. Losing him removes the Rams' most proven target after Puka Nacua for most of the rest of the regular season.
The defensive line takes the next hits
Nose tackle Poona Ford ruptured his triceps on Sunday and will miss the rest of the season, McVay said. Defensive tackle Kobie Turner strained his groin and is expected to miss four to six weeks. Turner will likely go on injured reserve, with the Rams planning to use one of their return designations on him so he can come back later this year.
The line was already thin. Pass rusher Myles Garrett has been on injured reserve since September 17 after knee surgery in mid-September and has missed the last five games. McVay said Garrett will not return to practice this week. Cornerback Trent McDuffie, who missed Sunday's game with a groin injury picked up in practice last week, is doing better. "He's feeling much better," McVay said. The Rams hope he progresses this week and will decide his status at the end of the week.
A third kicker, and a hard road ahead
Kicker Blake Grupe tore his ACL on Sunday and was placed on injured reserve on Monday, ending his season. Grupe had joined the Rams only last week, when the team released Harrison Mevis, and now Los Angeles needs its third kicker of the season. McVay said the Rams are "working on some different options" and expect to settle the spot in the next day or two.
The Rams are 2-4 and travel to face the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday. With Adams out, McVay said the team will discuss adding a receiver. Behind Nacua, the active roster has Konata Mumpfield, Jordan Whittington, Tutu Atwell, C.J. Daniels and Alex Bachman. Mumpfield leads that group with eight catches for 127 yards and one touchdown. Sunday's game in Las Vegas will show how much of the offense the Rams have to rebuild on the run.
