Ukraine Says a Heavy Drone Flew a Wounded Soldier Off the Front Line in a First
The 92nd Assault Brigade said mines and Russian drones made a ground rescue impossible, so a modified Gurzuf Defence hexacopter lifted a wounded 30th Brigade infantryman to safety. BBC Verify said the video shows no signs of AI manipulation.

Ukraine's 92nd Separate Assault Brigade said on Monday, Oct 19, that its specialists flew a wounded soldier off a front line position with a heavy drone, in what the brigade called the world's first aerial evacuation of a casualty from the battlefield.
The wounded man is an infantryman from the 30th Separate Mechanized Brigade. He was hurt while holding a position that ground crews could not reach. The brigade said the ground around the position was mined and Russian drones were active overhead, so even the unmanned ground vehicles that Ukrainian units now routinely use to pull out wounded troops could not get through.
A bomber drone adapted for a rescue
Specialists from the 92nd Brigade's unmanned ground systems company worked with neighbouring units and with Ukrainian manufacturer Gurzuf Defence, which supplied a heavy hexacopter for the operation free of charge. ArmyInform, the Ukrainian military's news agency, said the Ayudag-6 aircraft was adapted with the maker so it could carry a person and stay stable in flight, without tipping over or swaying too much. The team tested the setup at the manufacturer's facilities before the mission and planned the operation with nearby units.
A drone operator from the 30th Brigade piloted the aircraft. Video released by the brigade shows the drone coming down to the ground, a man in combat gear fastening himself to a winch on board, and the drone lifting him away at low altitude. He was carried to a safer position, where comrades met him and arranged his onward trip to a hospital.
BBC Verify said it confirmed the identity of the army personnel in the video and found no signs of AI generation or manipulation. The description of the flight as a world first is the brigade's own claim, and it has not been independently proven. What is clear from the footage and from several separate reports is that an aerial drone, not a ground vehicle, carried this wounded man out.
"His life is no longer in danger"
"The operation was successful. The wounded person was saved. He is now undergoing treatment and rehabilitation, and his life is no longer in danger," the 92nd Brigade's drone unit said.
Gurzuf Defence said the man had spent almost a year and a half at a dangerous combat position and could not be rescued by normal means. "Any attempt to reach him would have meant a deadly risk for the rescue team," the company said.
"This is a historic event, at least for our unit," said a commander with the 92nd Brigade's unmanned ground systems company, identified by the call sign Napalm. "This is the next stage in evacuating the wounded."
ArmyInform said the operation brought together the 92nd Separate Assault Brigade, the 30th and 14th Separate Mechanized Brigades, the 10th Army Corps and Gurzuf Defence. The brigade did not say when or where the evacuation took place.
Ground robots came first
Ukraine has long used unmanned ground vehicles to reach wounded soldiers in places too dangerous for medics and drivers. This is the first reported case of an aerial drone being used for the same job.
Both Russia and Ukraine have made heavy use of drones in the war that began with Russia's full scale invasion in February 2022. Analysts cited by AFP describe parts of the front as a kill zone, where constant drone surveillance and strikes make any movement in the open dangerous. That is the problem this flight was built to solve: getting a wounded man out of a position that no person and no ground robot could safely reach.
Timeline
- Feb 2022Russia launches its full scale invasion of Ukraine. Drones later become central to fighting on both sides.
- Oct 19, 2026Ukraine's 92nd Separate Assault Brigade releases video and says a heavy Gurzuf Defence hexacopter evacuated a wounded 30th Brigade infantryman from a front line position that ground vehicles could not reach. The brigade calls it the world's first aerial evacuation of a casualty from the battlefield.
